I am so with you on this! I never hear "thank you" any more! It certainly causes me to think twice before I go to that place of business again.

If you'll notice, as I have, this is mostly done by younger people, who obviously haven't been taught anything but how to ring up the purchase or ticket and count change after the machine has done it for them. The last time someone said that to me, I looked puzzled at them, and said, "I'm sorry?" The girl got very flustered and stammered "Have a good day," although it was evening. I then smiled (smirked) and said "thank you, same to you."

It's an expression used because they don't know anything else to say.

Today's customer service people are a poor, lazy excuse for representatives of a company or store. If we were paid on commission based on our customer satisfaction, we would have a 50% unemployment rate or a lot of poor cashiers.

If anyone feels guilty about this, then you know what to do the next time you greet and serve a customer at work. If you are insulted or defensive about this response, then you are the exception to the norm in today's society! God bless you for taking your job serious enough to make a POSITIVE difference in a customer's shopping experience.

I agree with you that obviously thank you is on it's way out. That's sad to see common courtesy go by the wayside. I do the same as you and say thank you when really they should have told me. I don't feel foolish though. I figure it's a reminder that THEY should have said it to me and THEY should feel foolish.

You mean the change they give you that requires a computer to calculate for them since noone knows or is taught how to count change anymore? I had a girl once search up and down the entire store for a calculator because her computer went down and she couldnt count my change. Sad part was, I gave her exact change.

I have to admit this is an odd question, but really very good one too. IMHO it's more like.."I'm done with you so leave, I have a dead end job and more just like you to deal with!" But that's just me.

I look square at them and just say, "You are welcome" regardless of what they say.

IMO, you are giving them service, buying their goods, whatever - and they should appreciate it and at least say "Thank you" - I have the tendency to say Thank you to them for the same reason...
