this pc is preloaded with XP and various software. I can reinstall the original software from the hard drive, but if I installed another more current XP version would that mess things up?

I am not sure what you mean by "newer version". It is most likely that your computer came with Windows XP Home Version. You can update it to the most recent version of XP just by going to the Microsoft Windows Update site and downloading & installing all the updates.

You should also be able to install XP Professional or XP Media Center Edition without causing problems, although XP Pro cannot be upgraded from XP Home without using a full install disk, which is expensive, about $300.

It would very likely not work to install XP Pro 64 Bit or XP 2003 Server over XP Home, but I honestly do not know for sure, and this is very likely irrelavent.

There is only one Windows XP with different features
- Windows XP Home
- Windows XP Pro
- Windows XP Media Center

What you can get are the latest Service Packs by going to Windows Update

A more current version of Windows is Windows Vista but that has more problems than XP

Yes, it would "would mess things up", just do all Windows Updates and you will have the latest version of XP.

"I can reinstall the original software from the hard drive"

TIP: Read the Manual and create your own Recovery Disks, NOW!!!
