Some people are turned off by the thought of masturbation, so it is quite possible that this guy has never done so.
Especially, if he's 52; because he grew up in a time, where it wasn't appropriate to do anything sex-related. Why would it matter if he does or doens't anyway?

I would say that *most* people, by the age of 52, have masterbated. But there are some people that just don't feel comfortable with the idea of it (whether its for religious reasons, or whatever) and they just won't do it. Maybe he's one of those people, who knows?

Well unless you have evidence of of the contrary then why not believe him? I have a brother who is 30 and he claims never to have masturbated. It is possible because those who dont masturbate just have alot more wet dreams.
