A proper cheesesteak is steak, onions and whiz on a hoagie roll. provolone is acceptable, as is the addition of mushrooms or hot peppers, but any other additional vegtables or alternate cheeses will result in an unauthentic hoagie.

Only if you want to be laughed at, like John Kerry:

(You may need to cut & paste part of this link, but the story is hilarious.)

An authentic philly cheesesteak is made with Cheese Whiz. If you can't bring yourself to order the Whiz, American or Provolone are also acceptable.

A steak can also be had "wit" or "witout" fried onions, or even mushrooms, but never with Swiss cheese. At least, not in this town.

I think you can be arrested in Philly for putting swiss on a chesesteak. Provolone is the standard or cheese-whiz.

Swiss? I've never heard of Swiss used on a cheesesteak.

I've seen Provolone OR CheezWhiz used, depending on which of the "big two" places you go in Philly.

THe most popular in Philly uses Cheese Whiz. That is a "cheese food" not a variety of real cheese.

Nope! A good cheesesteak should have (depending on where you go) Cheez Whiz, American Cheese, or Provolone.
Swiss cheese is just too snooty!

I prefer mine 'wit' and American Cheese (grilled/fried onions and American Cheese). I also prefer sweet peppers, but that's a whole other story!

Jim's Steaks a famous steak place in philly uses Whiz and Provolone. I think Geno's does the same. NO SWISS.

NOOOOO!!!!! I've never heard of Swiss cheese on a cheese steak. It's usually Cheddar Wiz, Provolone, or American.

Provolone is the true cheese for a Philly cheese steak.

Cheese Whiz is the new kid on the block.
