It depends on so many things. Are you advertising in a quality full color magazine, or in a newpaper? What is the circulation numbers of the publication. Daily newspapers usually are thrown away on a daily basis. A magazine with a higher quality full color printing will sit around in offices, etc. for months, and give you numerous exposures for every issue. If you are going with a quality publication, a photograph will reproduce better, especially in full color, than black, or black and 1 spot color in a newspaper. Heavy borders, or reverse images will stand out more in newspapers that grayscale photographs.

It also depends on what you are advertising. A concept needs to be developed for your particular service or product that is unique, and a flattering, eye-catching design created for the type of media that you are using. Using the same type of design over and over becomes familiar to people and they will notice your ad easier. It usually takes 3 times of seeing an ad before people actually recognize and read it. Limit the amount of copy that you use in your ad. Potential customers need to be able to get the message of what it is that you are selling within 3-4 seconds of seeing your ad.

I suggest you work with a professional graphic designer who has several years of experience in advertising. Ask to see their portfolio. If they only have samples of things that have been printed in newspapers, you will know not to trust them with your $1,200.00 full page 4-color ad. If you like their portfolio, ask for references, and call the clients to find out how it went working with the designer.

If you find a designer who shows you several jobs done for one client, that is a good sign that the customer is happy and has returned time and time again.

I encourage you to ask to see a designers portfolio and ask for references, as today there are many "wannabe" designers out there. Just because someone has a laptop computer and a PrintPro program does not mean they know how to design, or let alone prepare files properly to get the best results for printing with today's highly technical processes .

Neither is best. The graphic used should be the one that best presents the client's message.

Also, the subject matter may be one that only suggests the product, such as when advertising femine hygien products.

In other cases, when the graphic cannot be done in a photograph, artwork must be created from scratch. If an advertizer wanted a pink F-22 raptor jet placed in a field of flowers, for instance, it couldn't be done photographically. In such a case, a digital designer would create the aircraft, from scratch in illustrator and include in the image any kind of forground or background required.

Even something so prosaic as an ad for an automobile. You might be surprised at how often a photorealistic car is actually portrayed by a created artwork.

There is no "Best" way, except for the best way to present the subject.
