First, it depends on what is hurting your score and how far "back up" you want it to go. Having a bill in collections and being at the max on your credit lines are two different problems. Sometimes, opening another account will bring your score up (because of increased credit available vs amount owed) and sometimes it will lower it (because of number of revolving accounts). It does depend on your situation. If you want to see it jump up, pay your cards down to 1/2 of their max...

It does not affect your score when you pull your own report.

First, no it doesn't count against you to pull your own credit! These days Identity theft is the most rapidly growing crime in america and that's why credit monitoring is easily available.

How long does it take for your credit score to go back up? Up from what? If you have credit problems, you shouldn't be waiting for your credit score to go back up on it's own!

Go to the website below and read ALL of it! Get the RSS feed to since more info is being added. There is a great section about "how credit scoring works" and a section for "credit monitoring" you should look into.

I made my credit score go from 480 to 709 in one year with the help of this site and their sponsored links.

If you want to check your credit report, use AnnualCreditReport.com. It's the site set up to get your free annual credit reports from each credit bureau. If you spread them out thru the year, you can monitor your credit. The reports are free buy you have to pay for the score.

FreeCreditReport required you to sign up for their monitoring services, which are really a waste of money. They also make it difficult to cancel that 30 day free trial.

When you pull your own credit report, it's a soft pull and doesn't impact your score. Only credit inquiries from creditors processing your application ding your credit. It rebounds quickly.
