If traveling by Land or Sea you don't need a passport until about the Summer of 2008 (Not firm date set yet.) A passport is preferred, but you can get by with a drivers license and a birth certificate.

Currently you only need a passport if you fly.

Actually, u don't need one to get in, but you do need one to get out(that's the way it is for Americans going to Canada)
