I have an ancient dog. Supposed to have died when I rescued her due to everything wrong and her age. She knows her nae is Bessie but I have no clue what it was the first ten years of her life.

You can name them anytime you want, and change his name if you adopt him, but I'd wait with a new puppy until you are with it for a few days, watch its behavior, and see how it acts--you may find that the dog pretty much names itself, based on its behavior and personality.

If you adopt a dog, I'd keep the name he came with if he knows his name. Otherwise, he's fair game. We adopted a chocolate lab from the pound named Molly. I had all types of creative names picked out having to do with chocolate candy, but she knew her name, so she's Molly. That may be a good thing, too--she's become diabetic, and naming a diabetic dog after candy would be cruel.

You can name a dog any time you want, but you should 're-name' an older dog IMMEDIATELY or as soon after you get it as possible. Dogs are VERY impressionable ... to get your dog to get used to coming to a 'new' name, just give it a treat every time you call it for a month ... the dog will 'come' when called after that, because that 'name' may mean it gets a treat, or a walk, or something good.

Name the dog when you get it. Make sure it's a name you want to use for the dog's life. If it already has a name, you'll want to use both names (old and new) for a while. Then slowly drop off the old name.

Yes, you can change its name. However, if its an older dog, it is used to the name it had before you adopted it. Therefore, it might take longer for it to learn its name, compared to teaching a name to a puppy.

Of course you can. I would recommend using a 2 syllable name. I have been a dog owner for most of my life and always end up giving my dogs more than 1 name anyways.

They learn very quickly with repetition.

You can, but the older the dog is, the longer it takes. Try using both the old and new names together for a while and then drop the old name.

You can name them at any age. Are you talking about a purebred registered dog? In that case, I don't know. But if it's not registered, you can change the name at any time, just be aware it might take awhile for him to respond to his new name.

You can name them whenever you want. Ususally they are named as puppies. If you are adopting, it depends on if the dog has a name and if he / she is used to it. If they are used to it, the best thing you fcan do if you want to change it is to rename them somthing close to their name they have.
And example being - Cooper to Keeper
Something like that.

Well, if you want it to know its name, you should start calling it by its name right away so that it can get used to it. If you adopt a dog, it is rightfully, and leagally, your dog therefore you can name it whatever you want.
