Hi,I use Spanish every day.I started learning it over 45 years ago and I am not finished. The last ten years it has been a day and night sort of thing. My 9 year old granddaughter in Cuba speaks it fluently but I have a much larger vocabularly than she does.Sometimes you see courses advertised saying; taking our course you will speak like a native in 6 weeks.Don't believe it. Often I say 'I speak 1 word fluently and that is--NO--.I attend a Sp. church every Sunday and I usually open the services with greeting,Bible reading and prayer in Spanish. It takes very long to learn any language.Understanding the spoken language takes the longest.

It depends a lot on the age of the person. It also depends on the "knack" or "ability" of the person to learn a new language. Schooling and studying are important, of course, as well as being in an environment that only speaks that language if that's available. I've seen people learn a new language in as little as about 3 months and some, that even after studying, don't learn a language well enough to converse in it even after 20 years!

I learned Spanish in 3 months, but I went to live in a small village in Spain, with no other English speakers, no supermarkets, I had to ask for everything, a grammar book and a radio. I used to go to the local bar to listen to people talking and once they had got used to me and understood why I was there everyone was very helpful. After that I started work for a Spanish company and my language skills improved. After 22 years here in Spain I still learn something new everyday!

It depends where you live as to how long it will take you and the amount of effort you put in. Good luck
