I've heard many, many rumors that December 21, 2012, is the day the world ends.

Personally, I don't believe a word of it. I think that the Mayans just stopped predicting. It seems that the solstice would be a perfect place to stop, and an easy place to start again.

Besides, I have heard that the Age of Aquarius isn't going to reach its peak until 2654. The Age of Aquarius has been described as characterized by technical progress, and finally the dissolve of religion due to science.

Now, I'm not saying we'll make it until 2654.

I'm just saying we'll almost certainly make it past 2012, unless there's a nuclear war or something.

So, why WILL the world end as we know it in 2012?

Actually the Mayan calendar was an astoundingly accurate set of observations and calculations. The most amazing thing about it is that it is based on observed cycles of celestial events. Planetary and lunar cycles are mapped into it very thoroughly.
The complete calendar completes its largest cycle on the date the matches our date December 21st, 2012. The world does not end,the cycle just repeats with a note that it is the next cycle starting. Kind of like us marking a new year on our calendars.

Did they not say the same thing in 2001?

If you believed this stuff and read all of the junk magazines that publish this you would think the world would end every year.

I cant tell you how many times I have walked thru the grocery isle and saw magazines with headlines "rapture" "end of times" blah blah blah.

Just live your life and be a good person.

Why is it nobody ever predicts something way, way off. In 8000 years of human history, through the countless end of the world predictions, it's always been about the people living in that particular time. Nobody ever comes along and says they've discovered an ancient prophecy that says th world will end in 3654. It's always somewhere in the very near future.

It comes after 2011 in the natural progression of numbers. I have no reason to believe time will end before that year. Thus, I think the year 2012 will happen as scheduled.

No one knows when the world will end not even Jesus Christ knows the time He will come again.

The Mayan calendar ends on the year 2012 and so many make the assumption that they had some inside information. I think they just got tired or ran out of rock.

2012 will happen because 2011 can't last forever.

Why will the world end? It won't.

This has been asked many times. Its just a Mayan calender, what is with all this veneration with ancient peoples? If they were so great how come they're all dead?

The age of aquarius? Oh god... You're one of THEM.

I heard the Mayan calendar ends in 2012 because they ran out of ink. Besides, who orders calendars that far in advance anyhow? My calendar ends in January... does that mean I'm predicting the end of the world? Nope. It just means I don't have next year's calendar yet...

There have been so many dates the world is supposed to end. Most of them have already passed. I remember freaking out at the whole 2000 thing. We are still here and kicking.

More prophetic crap.

Remember the rapture? Took place in the mid 90s. Oh, wait... it didn't happen.

But it WILL happen in Jerry Falwell's lifetime... except he's dead.

Well, the 2nd coming was going to be in the lifetime of the deciples... and I'm pretty sure they're all dead now, too.

There was that JW thing... when was that rapture? 1939 or something?

Y2K? Still here. 5/5/2000? Still here.

Guess what: if the world ends it's because WE f'ed it up.

It won't happen, not as you suggest it might.

I don't believe it, either. Most people do not.
Many Christians have come here and stated the same thing.

This question has been asked numerous times.

People have been proclaiming that the world will end since the world began.

It will end when it ends.
