The one who sell the most.

But since these represent only 1.3% of the total media sold (VHS still makes up .9% of media sales). It is way to early to tell.

These, although superior could go the way of Laser Disk. Then just a few years later a much superior format emerged, DVD.

Either of these will not take off until the media itself is as cheap or cheaper than DVDs now, just like what it took for VHS to wane to DVD.

We (the consumers) will win.

Yes - it is annoying to choose between the 2 formats. But keep in mind that the competition between the companies behind each format is a good thing. It will force the price of the disks and players to go down.

If there was only 1 format - the players would be $900 each and none of the studios would be making disks until the prices drop, and more people bought the players.

One of the last studios to adopt DVD's a few years ago was ultra-conservative Disney. Only when they started putting out their movies on disks did many industry-watchers declare that "DVD was here to stay." Disney has already started putting movies out on BluRay (mainly because of their close business ties to Sony).

My best advice is this: Wait.

My next advice is: look for movies you love to decide a format. If it is blu-ray, buy a PS3 so you will have a combo game and DVD system.

If you decide on HD-DVD - buy a stand-alone player.

There are 2 companies making players that handle both formats, but the magazines who have tested them say they do play movies, but some of the 'extra features' found on dedicated players are missing.

Whichever format the porn industry decided on.
Not to sound crude, but that's how we ended up with VHS. For a while there was a formatting war between VHS and Beta.
Beta was smaller, had a higer capacity, and was an all around better technology. However, the porn industry which makes up for billions of dollars in movie sales decided it wanted to use VHS because it was easier and cheaper to manufacture.

That's why the blu ray and hd dvd corps. are fighting for various moviemaker's like Disney to pick a side. The one that gets the most support from the people that make the most money making movies will win...and the porn industry makes more movies than Disney, Pixar, Fox, Tristar, Lionsgate and Columbia combined.

Good question, but I think it's too early too tell. HD DVD supposedly has better video codec's then blu ray, but who can argue with the capacity and capabilities with blu ray. I'd like to see blu ray win.

Blu-ray is sure to win. Normal DVDs hold about 2GB of info, HD DVDs hold about 8GB, Blu-rays hold 20GB. Therefore more detail can be shown and audio can be uncompressed. Both allow for great pictures, but blu-rays audio is far superior.
