the exercise that "you" are most efficient at performing is optimum for you to use for fat loss. the intensity at which exercise is performed at determines how much or little of an increase there will be in the metabolic rate after exercise. real fat loss occurs as the result of an elevated metabolic rate not as the result of the exercise itself.

I would recommend doing both. I usually run the treadmill for about 25-30 mins then the elliptical for another 15-20 mins. 40-45 minutes of cardio is good enough to burn calories and lose weight. You should do that in conjunction with a decent weight training regimen, because muscle helps burn the fat you have. And don`t worry about getting too big or anything like that. Just do 3 sets with 10-12 reps of each exercise and you`ll be fine.
The bottom line is, whatever you do to lose weight the key is to burn more calories than you take in. As long as you do that, you`ll lose the weight you want.

I would recommend the elliptical. It is easier on the legs and knees. Even if your knees are fine now, if you plan to regularly use the equipment, your legs will thank you in a few years for lessening the stress on them by using the elliptical.

Runnind is good for you to get that chisseled look along with lifting weights, the eliptical is really great for burnign caloires. I do a little of both and I dropped a lot of weight!!!! make sure to lift light weights though, running burns a lot of muscle becasue it's high impact!

The theory of fitness is to get all of your muscles into use. There's usually not one exercise to to do that, so mix it up as much as possible, for example the stationary bike with toe straps then allow you to lift and work the upper hip muscles too! Variety leads to total body health.

You can burn more calories faster on a treadmill, not like twice as much in equal time but a slight amount more; however, if you have had multiple knee injuries (such as I have) then an eliptical machine is your answer. Its virtually no impact and free of injury risk, not to mention you can burn calories faster on an eliptical then say an exercise bike.
