I understand using a speakerphone when you are listening to your bank account, or to hold music etc. But, I think it is very rude to call a place of business and expect that the person on the other end of the phone to deal with the laziness of not picking up the phone. (not blaming people who cannot do it, just the lazy ones).
Does anyone have any recommendations for a nice way to tell them to pick their phones up? I have tried to tell them that I cannot hear them, then they scream (lol). I work in healthcare and would bet that there are HIPPA regulations affecting this anyway.

to-s, there is not a wait time; the phone rings and someone answers; the ONLY wait is if you have to connect to the right rep but that is only seconds

I don't know why people don't understand that speaker phones are meant more for conference type calls than for regular everyday use. They are really very annoying and I suspect you are right about the regulations you should be following in your office. In fact that might be your way out of having to deal with people speaking to you on a speaker phone. Ask if they have you on speaker, then tell them nicely that you can't speak to them unless you know it's a private conversation and speaker phone is not private. Some will probably argue with you at first, but done pleasantly, and with some practice, you may be able to get a dialogue down that is convincing enough that they won't question it.

How long is the wait time before a real live person comes on the line at your place of business. I know that in many cases I just put the phone on speaker while the muzak plays until the csa comes on. I usually then change to regular phone but I can see where someone might forget or is now doing something with their hands. If more businesses would put you right through, you probably wouldn't have this problem.

There are some people at my work who have 20 minute conversations on their speaker phones and the entire office can hear! And I do not like being put on speaker phone because I find it cuts out often and I miss every third word the person is saying.
Maybe just politely say, are you on speakerphone? And when they say yes, say "You are cutting out quite a bit and I can't hear you properly, do you mind picking up the phone?" Most people will. If they don't, keep saying "I'm sorry, pardon? Pardon me? That last part cut out, can you repeat it?" They will get so annoyed of repeating themselves that they'll pick up.
For people who use speakerphone at work, perhaps bring it up with your supervisor. Tell him/her that you find the speaker phone conversations distracting and woud appreciate if fellow employees could pick up their phones when they are able.

I've worked in a call center, and I have asked people out right to pick up the phone so I can better serve them. I simply cannot hear well enough to help them otherwise.

I once worked as a supervisor at a restaurant owned by Germans. Try having to have a conversation with them and understand what they are saying to you when they are using their speakerphone!!OMG!! Not fun! :S

First.. It's HIPAA, not two "p"s. Being in healthcare, you SHOULD know this.
Second, HIPAA keeps YOU from broadcasting the information, not me. It's my info to do with as I see fit.
Third, you can't tell someone to pick up the phone. It's not your right or your place. Deal with it.
I'm not lazy, I'm busy. I multitask and speaker phone allows me to continue taking care of my child while handling phone calls that can't wait.
