I noticed Salvia was mentioned several times and it isn't that unheard of especially on a college campus. It has hallucinogenic effects and many compare it to a stronger marijuana that doesn't last as long and some would go as far to say its comparable to lsd. It also comes in many different strengths which most people don't know...ranging anywhere from normal to 400X(400 times stronger high but very rare, 20x, 40x ,60x much more likely) to and its a completely legal substance that you can order in the mail if you please. Many college kids do this.
Another drug, which has made its name but not loudly enough is Adderall. It is an adhd drug that is the third most abused drug on many large campuses behind alcohol and marijuana College students use it as a study aid, sorta a super caffeine pill to study but much more dangerous.
Both of those could make for an interesting paper. Also you may want to look up DMT,hashish, ketamine, nitrous, dxm and morning glory. I wouldn't call any of them rare but they don't get the media coverage cocaine, meth, lsd, marijuana and other substance get.

Definitly not shrooms, I know a lot of people who do the. I would go with LSD. Meth is on the rise again. Herion is making/has made (depending on what part of the country you are in) a huge comeback, and of course weed never left. Coke is used less then in the 80's but still available and used frequently. I have only met a few people who have done acid, and it is not thought of as "cool" or even acceptable. Also most kids or teenagers are experimenting with perscription drugs so the illegal drug use may drop in the near future with a huge rise in the use of drugs like Oxycotin, Perceset, Xanax, etc
