Not for sure. It is a command decision. When I was stationed on shore, at White Sands Missile Range, where we were on six section duty, if you didn't have duty during the time you got the 96 hour liberty, command decision. Aboard ship we were on three section duty so it was impossible to get the whole weekend off. Even if you did not have duty and got off Thanksgiving day you had to be aboard Friday morning. Usually got early liberty on Friday. Back in my day of wooden ships and iron men we had a 50 mile limit from base or ship or we were out of bounds, things are probably different now. My best suggestion would be for him to get his chit in for four days of leave. If approved he will have no problem

Normally the day after Thanksgiving is a holiday. However, his duty day may fall on this day or the mission or tempo of the command may require that Friday be a workday. If he really wants it off, then he should walk through a leave request. How is it unfair? The Navy is not a 9-5 business! Just remember it is a 24/7 duty, and having that day off is considered a privilege not a right.

Normally, the day after Thanksgiving is a day off except for the duty section unless command mission or needs dictate otherwise. Remember, though, that the needs of the military always take precedence. It is up to the commanding officer.

If he's on a ship, he should already know what duty section is working the day after Thanksgiving. Lots of ships and shore commands do a "stand down" for Thanksgiving and give the Friday after Thanksgiving off. Wouldn't it be easier for you to purchase a ticket out to see him?

As it is not an official Federal Holiday, it is up to the command..I was never stationed anywhere that did not enjoy this day off..If they are in duty sections, etc, it may be more of a problem..If the CO is the same as last year, you should have a good idea..Ask around also..Someone their knows already

Ususally they will have the day after Thanksgiving off. But it depends on the command he is in. Have him ask his LPO or LCPO and find out. Otherwise put in a leave chit for it.

Ummm NO you're gonna have to wait until the command puts out what they are doing. This is unfortunatly just part and parcel of the military - it really just depends on his job, guard roster needs, etc, etc, etc.

Sorry. If I were you I would purchase a changeable, refundable ticket as cheaply as possible (try Southwest if you can) so that if things change it won't cost you more or just wait.

It depends on his job. However, he HAS to take leave to go more than X miles from his duty station (commander says how far, most places is 250 mile radius before you have to take leave.)

So even if he's scheduled to work, he can ask for leave. However, some jobs are a no go for leave at the holidays, so he'll just have to ask.

strictly command discretion, and if he has duty that day, unless he requests Leave he will not be allowed to come home.

Additionally, he may not be allowed to leave the immediate area if he does NOT request leave.

If he is in school, he will not be allowed to request leave and he will be most likely limited to no more 150 miles from base for the weekend.
