Both of my parents have elected to donate their bodies to a nearby medical school. My Dad passed away this summer and although it was a bit confusing to not have the usual dealings with a funeral home, the college representative and the funeral home director in charge of transport were both very helpful and considerate. We had a memorial service, which gave the family the closure we needed and as the pastor gave the service, he made sure to mention that Dad had donated his body. You could see that some people were a bit shocked, but as he spoke of the good and generous gift that it is, you could see them (most of them) smile, relax, and see it as the gift to us and the future that it is.
My husband and I have young children, and although they don't completely understand the topic, they were, and are, still a little unhappy with Dad's arrangement. I hope that when they're older and can understand it better, they will be more receptive, as I would like to donate my body as well, but not until they are able to handle it.

I'm thinking about it, but I really have to talk myself into it being that my body could be left outdoors to rot for forensic scientist to pick at, decapitated and mutilated to be sent all over medical schools, strapped into a car to see the effects of a crash or some other gruesome situation. I won't be using it after I am dead, but I would like my body to be handled with some dignity, which can't be promised.

Of course. After death, it's just meat, and can be used for research. I wouldn't care what kind of research.
