they help but are not required. and very simple to find. go look in your kitchen cubbard rosemary, sage, cinnamon, allspice, dill, i could go on and on. Don't be fooled by expensive products. I either make or already own most of my tools so don't go nuts. and I found my references in eek.. To light a sacred flame. by Silver Ravenwolf. even if you choose not to read her books the herbs and and candle correspondences are pretty helpful. But if all else fails use your intuition and dont spend tons of money.

Disclaimer: I'm not a Wiccan.

Many of the herbs used in traditional herbal remedies are wild plants that you can't necessarily buy. So a class would help you greatly! I highly suggest you don't study through a book because it would be easy to confuse a poisonous plant for a safe one (as an example, the Solancea family includes everything from Nightshade to tomatoes to Jimsonweed). Beyond that, there are tons of websites with various herbs and plants--you might look for one that caters to Pagans. I don't have any specific examples, but I find that I never have a hard time finding any herb I want online...heck, you can even buy illegal plants online. Good luck.

Greetings!

One thing that will help you, is to take a notepad with you when browsing the Bookstores. Buying Books is expensive, but if you take notes from the Books, you will save 100`s of $.

Many old recipes are from Old English, and fiding sites on the net to translate will help. Growing your own is the best, but look in the "international foods"isle for the little bags of Herbs and spices-they have a good selection, and good price.

No, the herbs are not necessary.
Tools aren't required for ANY ritual.

Find a better source for your learning than what you're using, seriously. If you'd be shown rituals where herbs are required, but the ritual doesn't tell you how to acquire them properly, you're dealling with crappy source material.

Herbalism is NOT religious, and Wicca is NOT about magic.

My sister gets many of her herbs in bulk at an herb shop.

it helps to grow your own, but in my experienses, that is sometimes difficult to do given climate and other influences. You can use storebought ones, but buy them fresh. if it calls for them being dried, dry them yourself. hope this helps
