With $500, you can afford a lot of compact digital camera. Go to your local camera store and check out the Fuji line. They are highly rated. After that, Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax and Sony all make good compact digital cameras. You can get a good one and have change. Take a look at Popular Photography and Consumer Reports. They give good recommendations.

the Panasonic cameras are great, with Leica lenses... .and the Canons are also good, most of the Canons have a viewfinder in addition to the lcd screen, which is very helpful in bright sunlight... for 500 dollars I'd go with the Canon G9, it's not "slim", but it is a superior camera, with full manual controls as well as 12.1 mp ... it also shoots RAW as well as jpg, which will give you a far superior image.

HP's are normally good BUT the one I have totally sucks.. I take about 20 pics, upload them on the computer and the batteries are dead. The quality is great but it just drains the batteries so badly and the rechargeable ones seem to die quicker .. can't even take 15 pics with them.. hope this helps you. I'd look at battery sizes and quantity to help me with my decision if I were you, 4 mp will take great pics no matter what the brand, try to save $ on those batteries is all I can suggest lol

Yo, all three brands are excellent choices. Go to the camera store and get the clerk to let you fiddle with each of them to figure out which one is easiest for you to use and go with that one. HEY - one suggestion I'd make - you can get an excellent camera for half that $500 figure. Spend the half you save on the camera and buy yourself a GPS device for your car... };^)
