You didn't say if you have store-bought Vista AND XP upgrade / full version Retail disks (not OEM) OR vendor (Dell, HP, etc.) supplied Vista AND XP Recovery Disks. You can't Mix & Match them, you must use your PC manufacturer's XP Recovery disks to avoid driver problems, not a store-bought XP disk.
TIP: The Vista Recovery disks may be ON the hard drive, so Read The Friendly Manual for your PC FIRST to find out how to BURN your own set of Recovery disks.
IF Vendor Supplied:
Back up all personal data from your PC ("Backup" means: copy to CD / DVD / external hard drive). Then, follow the Recovery procedure in the Manual.
IF Store-Bought:
Back up all personal data from your PC. Then, do a store-bought Windows XP "Clean Install", for further instructions, go to: http://www.theeldergeek.com
And, here's the "store-bought Vista to store-bought XP" Step By Step from Microsoft:

If you already have Vista installed, you can't reinstall XP.
Vista emits a set of drivers to all of your hardware that has specific instructions that say to not let any previous versions of these drivers be installed.
So.. even if you were to reformat your hard drive, when you booted the computer up, it would still look for Vista software.

You cant downgrade to xp using an xp upgrade cd... You will first have to install windows 98 or ME then upgrade to xp with the upgrade cd (if you own it)...
Other than that, you would have to format your computer, and install xp from yes, and xp pro cd.
Basically, XP Upgrade only works if you are actually upgrading...
Downgrade, nope sorry.

You need the full version. Vista has nothing of XP in it. So you couldn't downgrade. You'll need to reformat the drive entirely.
Good choice, BTW. Vista is a worthless chunk o crap.

yes, vista sucks....yes, you have to have a full copy of xp to downgrade.
with cryptic commands like
"netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled"
to simply get quickbooks running fast enough to use, i might as well be running Ubuntu LINUX . It is totally free, and comes with an entire Office suite that is completely compatible with MS Office.
I write programs for Windows, and I HATE Vista. MS stole the google sidebar, as well as many interface elements from Linux.
The funny thing is, many companies that sell computers with Vista offer a downgrade back to XP (for a price)
