Tithing was a means of financial support for the Temple in Jerusalem and its Levitic priesthood while they served in the Temple and because they inherited no land as a tribe. Modern Jews now give to their synagogues and support charities since there is no Temple currently standing in Jerusalem.
Tithing was adopted out of the Torah by christian churches to support their own activities. It is a borrowed custom that some ministers and churches use to pressure donations out of their congregations when free-will offerings aren't enough for their budgets.
Of course, Christians have a problem with tithing because they've been told over and over that the laws of the "old testament" don't apply to them because Jesus fulfilled the Torah and released them from its Laws, but ministers don't seem to think that tithing became obsolete.

You appear to have it pegged. The NEW TESTAMENT doesnt seem to have much to say on it.
But then again the old testament has most of the rules and punishments and basic ways of life. Since I dont know of any church that only goes by the new testament and none of the old testament then Im not sure how it would matter.
For questions like this, answerers should be sure to separate new testament, old testament, and what the church says that isnt in either one.

Tithing is not taught in the New Testament. The early Christians shared things in common. See Acts 2,42-46.

The obligation to tithe (i.e., to give 10 percent of one’s gross income) was binding only on the Jews. Jesus fulfilled the Mosaic law (Matt. 5:17), so even Jews are no longer bound by it. But this doesn’t mean we’re not obligated to support the Church-we are-but there is no longer a specific percentage required.
Scripture provides insight on how Christians should give:
On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper. (1 Cor. 16:2)
The point is this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Cor. 9:6-7)
There is no mandatory requirement to give a specific amount of money or percentage of our income. We should each decide for ourselves how much to give and then do so in the true spirit of giving a gift.

As much as you feel is appropriate... tithing only applied to the Nation of Israel. After Jesus' death and resurrection, the Law was fulfilled and therefore no longer an obligation for anyone. The fact that Jesus approved of the widow's 100% donation of 2 very small coins (showing her faith that God would take care of her) is proof of this. Whatever you can afford to give, do so cheerfully.

The Bible states to give your tithe, i.e. tenth = 10%.
The church has expenses as well as anyone. If you sit in church and you are warm in the winter and cool in the summer, the lights are on and water in the toilet, how do you think that is paid for? The income has to come from somewhere to keep your church open.
Oh, and the Bible states that it is a tenth of your FIRST FRUITS. That's before taxes!!

Tithing is a common sense principle. For in order for the Money System to work, there needs to be a free flow of money. Going from hand to hand.
People who hoard money damage the system as much as some criminals. And they print more money, and there is nothing to back it up.
There is, I think, a controlled effort to destroy the Money System. Playing on peoples desire for things, and the cost of living increase. We get 10 cents more on the hour. And the greedy raise their prices up on Everything!
The Money System will go bust soon. And we will have a little plastic card worth 50 cents. And the evil will have all the money.

According to God the Son Jesus Christ after you give FIRST to Caesar GOD whatever money you have left over belongs to God the Father. Few Christians want to admit that Caesar God was worshipped as GOD!... Ignorance is the brewing field of religion...
