I had some hardware removed from my arm yesterday. When they put something into my IV in the OR before I was unconscious, it felt like fire going through my entire body. It was so painful that I started to cry. They told me to try to relax and breathe deep from the mask they put on me. I'm not sure what it was they injected, but that's probably the most pain I have ever been in my entire life. Breaking my arm hurt less than that!!! When I had the hardware put in (plate and screws to fix the arm break) it was a very pleasant experience. Just wondering why it would hurt so badly the second time???

Also they gave me a sedative through the IV before I was taken back to the OR. This didn't hurt. I was asleep until they moved me to the table/bed in the OR. I woke up to the meds in the IV burning and a mask being put on my face. Just wondering why whatever they put into the IV caused so much pain.

Propofol is a very good anesthetic which can sometimes cause burning pain in the IV when it is administered. The pain is troublesome but not harmful and since it's quickly followed by unconsciousness, the best thing to do is to ask the patient to bear with it until the drug reaches the brain and does its thing.

Propofol has the interesting property of being a completely white liquid - when its running, it looks like they're running milk through your IV. If you recall seeing something like that, then that was definitely propofol.

I am trying to figure out if this is THE anesthetic, as in injected into the arm, or given via the IV. I am wheeled into OR wide awake with no IV let alone relaxant. I am not one for the mask and happy gas, so they knock me out via injection usually into the back of the hand. As the injection goes in you can feel it traveling up the arm like a burning sensation. While this is going on the Anesthetist usually ask me to count back from one hundred, or name my favorite girls name, boys name. If counting back from 100, usually get to about 97 and then out cold. Then they stick the breathing tube down my neck and control all from their. When I came around, a funny gas taste in my mouth but boy was I hot, burning and had oxygen mask on which was cold oxygen, so kept taking it off. I think the OR is kept at a cool temperature, or our body temperature drops and the burning seems to be the body re-establishing normal action.

That was propofol. Many of us mix it with numbing medicine to decrease the pain. If that wasn't done, it burns like fire, especially if you have a small or slow-running IV.

Some people react quite a bit to the propofol, while others barely notice it. I use lots of lidocaine with mine, and most people tolerate it well.

The drug was propofol. We usually give some lidocaine before injecting it, but even then it can burn. It is better to use a large vein if possible to avoid this. Sorry you hurt so bad.
