My nine month old dominican chihuahua wont stop biting his private area!! Ive checked him multiple times for fleas and he doesnt have a single one. I gave him a bath two days ago and it didnt seem to help. He just sits around and bites his area. Ive tried making loud noises when he does it to try and detour him from doing it (such as clapping, etc), but it doesnt help. He just ignores me and continues biting away. Why is he doing this?? Hes been to the vet recently, got his shots and was deemed healthy. Someone mentioned using a hot spot spray on his private region, but i'm worried about that possibly giving him an infection or something.. I'm not sure, ive never used that type of product so i'm just being cautious. Can anyone help me out here? I'd appreciate it! Thanks so much!

also, is it safe to put itch relief medicine on his private area? because hes biting it, not scratching it. and i wouldnt want to do anything that could irritate his area. any details regarding this would be helpful. thank you.

Pet stores aren't licensed to sell medications, so don't expect any of their stuff to work. Also, you should NOT apply anything to an animal if you don't know what the problem is - how do you know what you're treating?

You can't just use a 'hot spot spray' if it isn't a hot spot, i.e skin infection. Hot spots don't tend to come up on genital areas. Hot spots also require antibiotics, which are not available from stores, so 'hot spot spray' just sounds ludicrous really.

PLEASE do not rely on advice from strangers over the internet. Some people mean well, others don't. Even those that mean well often end up causing harm because there are no vets on here and even if there were - no one can diagnose over the internet!

Please get the pup looked at by a vet. A veterinary certification of health is only really good for the day the animal's examined, like a car MOT. It is not a guarantee that the animal will not develop any problems for any time period thereafter!

how long ago did he go to the vet, if the vet gave him shots it could be an allergic reaction to the shot. how does the area look, just red or is he scraching and opening up the skin, if its just irritated with no wounds i would use a product that stops him from scratching or itch relief, good luck

Your dog may have a foreign object in the prepuce or penis itself, or there may be a bladder stone stuck in the end of the urethra, or he has perhaps actually injured his penis and it is now inflamed and irritated. In any case, you are most likely NOT looking at just an itch or a scratch, he is severely uncomfortable and needs to be examined right away.

Have the vet check for Hayfever, I had a haschund do that for months as well as chewing his legs. Also has the vet checked for any problem in his genital area?
You could also try distrcting him and keeping him playing to minimise the damage, so to speak.

My pug is obsessive compulsive about itching and biting everywhere and though this is due to a medical condition we use benadryl spray to help her stop and she never has any side effects from licking at it. hope that helps!

maybe this is a stupid answer but... maybe he just wants to itch himself. if he isnt cutting the skin than is it such a big thing? my dog bites himself. i dotn believe it is as intensive as you describe your dog but he is a dog. dogs are smart and if he were hurting himself he would stop.... wouldnt he?
