Hong Kong is a wonderful city with a variety of atomspheres. It is a city that never sleeps. A very rush lifestyle, but challenging and fun. You see people walk fast everyday unless it is couples going out and having fun. If you walk slow and look around, people can tell that you are a tourist. Try to blend in with the local.
Go for Ladies Market in Mongkok, Langtham Mall, Temple St in Jordan, and Times Square in Causeway Bay for shopping. As for eating, try the local small restaurents.
Go to Nathan Rd and try walking from Sham Shui Po all the way to Tsim Sha Tsui, it is a long walk but so much to see , you won't get tired!!
In the end, HK is an energetic place. For some quieter movement, to go Tuen Mun, Shatin, and Yuen Long.

It's pricey because of the air ticket -- about 1000 for round trip back when we went five years ago. The city itself can be dirt cheap -- there are cheap hotels and the exchange rate is about 7 1/2 to 1 so dollars are good there. Food is cheap, clothes are cheap ... great shopping.
It's a little hectic but not as bad as you might think. People can be pushy but if you don't go in the crowded downtown right at rush hour then it's not too bad.
It's a FANtastic city and I highly recommend a visit.

Hotel costs are high! General living costs are not too bad c/w London for example. The city isn't as cheap as you might have thought - at least in the Nathan Road or Wan chai ares. Keep away from the centres of mass tourism and you can probably pick up a few bargains. Night life isn't cheap! But HK as a city is a great place to visit! I go as often as I can - but usually on the way to China or other countries in SE Asia where the real bargains can be found.

HK is a great place to visit. it can be expensive and cheap at the same time - really depends on where you eat, stay, play & shop.
eating in local restaurants is a great way to experience what the locals eat and it's very economical; there are restaurants with taste from every country you can imagine, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Mongolian, American, Australian, Indian, etc.
you can shop in fancy shopping malls or go bargain hunting along the street of Ladies Market, Temple Street Night Market, Stanley Market, Sham Shui Po, etc.
suggest staying in hotels along the MTR (subway/metro) lines; for Kowloon side, can try Tsim Sha Shui, Jordan, Yau Ma Tei, Mongkok, Prince Edward stations - these are more centralized. for HK side, can try Sheung Wan, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, Fortress Hill, North Point stations. can find decent 3, 4 star hotels along these points and they're usually within 5-10mins from the station. of course hotels further away from the station will be cheaper; really depends what you're looking for in a hotel (location or price or facilities, etc).
yes, HK is very hectic, especially during rush hours, mon-fri (and sat. mornings as some have to work half day); it's best to avoid the MTR/buses/ferry, ie any form of public transportation during these times, otherwise, you'll be pushed along!! other times are ok. and you will need to learn to walk fast in the city ~ nobody strolls!! but once you're outside the city centre, ie. new territories, it's more calm & green.
if you're considering visiting HK, don't wait too long - it really is a great place to see!!

The pace is fast, it's very densely populated, if you eat at the roadside stalls, it's cheap, but they have expensive restaurants and branded stores too so it all depends on you and how much you want to spend. The tube system is efficient, and shopping is great for clothes during the summer sale. But now they would be starting to sell winter wear. People can be gross can spitting is still very common among the older folks. There's a lot of touting so hold on tight to your wallet. If you walk past the girly bars at night, they grab you physically to try and get you to patronise their bar, so unless you do want to go in, it's better to avoid those areas. The younder generation speak English, but the older folks prefer Cantonese.

I lived there all my childhood. It's a great city with cheap+good food, shopping and transportation. Housing/hotels should be expensive, but other than that, tis a great place to be.

hi i was just there. people say it is expensive, but ti doesnt have to be. lots of cheap: yummy food, public transport, places to stay and shopping. plus many tourist attractions are free, stop by the tourist info kiosk once you exit immigration.. just walking around is an adventure. here are a couple of articles you might find helpful.

it's great. it's a really busy city, and there are crowds of people everywhere. the public transport system is great (but on the pricy side). pretty much everything else is dirt cheap because there is just so much competition. the nightlife is great too.
