Have your family contact the Red Cross. They will send a 'Red Cross Message' to your commander. Once your commander gets this type of message the paperwork is immediately started to send you home on emergency leave.
When I was a First Sergeant I had people on airplanes going home in a matter of hours of my getting a red cross message.

I am very sorry for the loss of your mother, I dont think you can just say I dont want to go now, I suggest speaking to you CO about how you feel and even your Chaplin, do you know how many Soldiers do not want to Deploy now?
I dont want to sound mean, unless the Marines are different from the Army where you can just say I dont want to go, it isnt going to happen.
Again I am very sorry for your loss as I understand how you feel, people of yahoo cant help you with this I am sorry.
Good Luck, may God Bless you and your family.

Im almost positive you can get emergency leave for the passing of an immediate family member, its not like your just chickening out and dont want to go, your mother passed away, and I think even the millitary understands your obligations to your family, good luck to ya!

If you were ordered to ship out yesterday, you arent leaving tomorrow anyways. You tell him your mom died and you need a few days to deal with family business then you go to Iraq. As an NCO you shouldn't even be thinking of ways to get out of your duty. As hard as it is, you have to suck it up and drive on.

you should tell them that you are not morally and physohologically in well condition to deal with such taks. I am sure they will first send you a therapist to determine whether you are capable of handling your job there or not. I dont think they will push you hard and make you gone there.
That is how it works here but military system is pretty much close in every nato members. Just tell them you cannot handle such task under such low moral and physcological conditions and make military Doctors belivied in you.
On the other hand , there is a guy above givin a lecture of pro-americanism way of approach to such incident. for the god sake, He lost his mother and you talk about a duty promoted by american government's and companies' oil interests? How reasonable american blind nationalism.
go , dude , tell them you are mentally in bad condition and they will take you to a military doctor, i am sure they will put the date off to a future time so u will have some time to relax.
Good luck again

My fiance is in the army, and he is currently in Iraq. Last year he was stationed in Korea, and his great grandmother passed away. His CO understood his situation and worked with him. If your CO doesn't let you stay home now, maybe he will let you take R&R soon after you deploy. You should just talk to him and tell him what is going on.

One of your family members has to contact the American Red Cross with the published death notice, the American Red Cross will in turn contact your Commanding Officer. Go see your local Chaplin for further assistance.
I very sorry for your lost

Tell him you need time to attend the funeral and if the family that are going to be affected are young children Contact the Red Cross. If it is not an must that you are needed to support and raise your family, you will have to go to Iraq.
