If the gap is too wide, keeping your believes in your heart and avoiding deeds that are forbidden by Islam as practically as you can, that would be one way to compromise.

Remember always that God know what we have in our hearts and what are our intentions, God is mercifully, he will not punish you for something you cannot do it and he know that your intention is to follow the instructions of Islam within your capabilities, but if the counter current is stronger than you, your heart will be the safest place for your believes, God know about it and that is what you will be judged for.

It is clear to see for anyone who takes the time to read the Qu'ran, that it has very little to none tolerance to other "ways of life" than the commands of it's own.
