I never have trouble getting to work and my marriage does not seem to suffer. I drink quite a lot. I never drink and drive. I never feel hung-over. I don't feel like there are short term effects but maybe long term effects?

Opinions?

The test for alcoholism is your ability to do without alcohol for a period ( say two weeks ) without longing for it .
If you're doing the two weeks . but it's in your mind a great part of the time , you find yourself saying to yourself , " Boy ,I wish I had a drink " , you're an alcoholic .
If you can sit in an easy chair watching the teevee, with a bottle of booze over on the table but you don't bother to take a drink - - - just not in the mood for a snort , you've got it made.

3 to 4 drinks a night is still a bit pass the "healthy" zone (man should have no more then 2, woman 1). If you were alcoholic, you would crave the drinks, one following the other when the effects of the first are dissipating. It can replace hunger too. And you wouldn't only allocate them in the evening, you would probably start your day with it. What you say makes me believe you are responsible still about the situation : Good marriage, no drink-driving. Try to see if you can reduce to 2-3 drinks a night. If it becomes unbearable, you might have a dependancy and so, a problem.
But it doesn't sound as bad as real alcoholism.

Personally, I think that you should cut back on your drinking before there's an issue with your health, family or career. Excessive alcohol intake can damage your liver and other organs over the long term. Maybe you could limit yourself to one drink per night during the week to start and then have your 3-4 drinks on Friday or Saturday night. If you find that you can't cut down or keep slipping back to the 3 drinks per night routine then it's time to do some soul searching about alcoholism.

Can you go without alcohol without feeling like you're missing out on something? Do you feel any adverse effects when you don't drink?

You are definitely taking a toll on your liver and metabolism, though.

Is it beer or shorts(spirits)?
3-4 beers is still alright, normal lager is even good for the kidney's, bad is spirits for sure if it's malt(like whiskey) not alright also bad is Martini (is very bad for the brain).
