I was searching thru craigs list last night and came across a boxer/rottie puppy. 7 weeks old may I just add. I emailed this woman and asked how much she was selling her for. She emailed me back asking $350. WHAT???? Are you serious, its a mutt? I can get a purebred boxer by paying a little more then that price. Anyone else outraged on the prices of these dogs now days. How is it they are getting money for MUTTS and stupid people paying for them? Remember when mutts were free to a good home? Remember when kittens were free? Unreal!!!!

I do adopt and rescue animals. It was asked out of curiosity! All my dogs are adopted or rescued now.

D I don't appreciate your rude comment and sure hope it was not directed to me and you were speaking out to the general public either or, your answer is just purely ignorant.

I know what you mean - I tried adopting this lab from a lady on Craig's List that was 4 months, she said she couldn't take care of him anymore as she was 'too busy', so I said I'd love to give him a home. I said the average adoption fee on Craig's list was $50-$100 and I'd be willing to pay that. She said she wanted $500!!!!!! I said what? For $550 I can get a 7 week purebred lab.
You try to do something nice for someone by giving their dog a home and they try to get every penny out of you they can.

EDIT: I really wanted to add that we've been having SUCH a hard time trying to adopt a pet and the prices are ridiculous - I think we're just going to end up purchasing another purebred lab from a breeder we know. You wouldn't think trying to adopt an animal would be so difficult!

Right now the designer dogs are popular. People want teeny tiny dogs to put in their purse or dog that are hypoallergenic o just their two favorite breeds meshed together. Just like when ever there is a demand for things, people higher there prices and overproduce. The people who are getting these "designer dogs" don't know any better than to spend $2,000 on one. Maybe that's the reason! The people who are buying "designer dogs" know hardly anything about the dog business and are more prone to spending a whole lot of money for a mutt. They probably think with the fancy bow and background, these MUST be good breeders or a good pet shop to get a puppy from. People going to buy a pure breed dog may know that without papers, the dog can't be worth as much so they have a little more knowledge than the people looking to purchase a designer dog.

Yeah your right. If you wanted a puppy or kitten we just had to walk into town and there was always some little kid with a shopping cart and a sign "Free to a good home" (usually misspelled) Oh, the good old days when mutts were mutts and we were proud of them.
Now those little kids grew up and saw that there is a profit in it and started selling them on Craigs list for a bundle. I guess IQ's have dropped in the last 30 years.

That is pricey for a mutt. Mutts should only cost whatever veterinary care has been put into them. If no veterinary care has been given, then $50 (just to keep away the people that pick up "free to good home" puppies for unethical purposes, like dog-fighting bait dogs or for labs that test on animals).

Although I typically expect to pay between $800-$1600 for a pet-quality purebred dog from a reputable breeder.

You should report that woman. Craig's list has a rule that you can only charge "adoption" fees for animals listed on the site. You cannot sell animals.
And regardless of the rule, yes, that is ridiculous.
Real animal rescue groups charge less than that, and they usually get the dog UTD on shots and usually even get them fixed - which saves you a lot of money. I'm getting a 6 month old pug this weekend from a rescue group - she is UTD, spayed and microchipped - $275. I feel like I *should* be paying them more than that for the dog, since she had mange before and has had multiple vet trips and fees.

I completely agree with you! When I was a kid (many moons ago) people actually tried to give away these types of dogs for FREE!!! Now they seem to be the "thing" to have. They are just mutts -- and there is nothing wrong with mutts, but they should not be getting AKC prices for them. In my opinion it's price gouging and should be regulated. It's like buying a Ford Escort but paying the price of a Cadillac Escalade!

they are only supposed to be getting a SMALL adoption fee on craigs list. also there is a rescue HOMEWARD bound in albany, ny......... worse than adopting a child i think and still want $400 or so for a mutt. the process to adopt is outrageous with them, among a lot of shelters with applications and so on .........

there is a lady on this answer center. she puts her web page on here too and she wants $3500-$5000 (not a typo) for golden doodles pups. THEY ARE MUTTS , dammit. i rescued my 11 year old from aspca and guess what .......she is a golden doodle......... she is insane to want that , but worse is SHE IS gettinG that much.
do a search for golden doodles and check it out * and she IS A PUPPY FACTORY money hungry

Mutts should be free or cheap. Don't buy the $350 mutt. The best places to find free or inexpensive dogs are local newspaper classified ads or the local pennysaver type magazines.

I agree, it is utterly ridiculous. What is she doing? Trying to claim it is a "designer" dog? lol. If I was looking for a mix, Id give my money to a shelter, not some woman off craigs list. For the pure breed Im interested in, I assume I will be paying $1000+.
