Well, you can use it to produce energy... it is more environmentally friendly than fossil fuels except that the waste must be stored cautiously -- a small amount is enough to power an entire city... It can also be dangerous, however...
you can also apply it to build destructive bombs to threaten your annoying neighbors...

Anything you can power with other means, you can power with nuclear. Your blender, television, microwave, and if we ever get around to making a practical one, your electric car. If you buy into the idea that carbon dioxide emmissions are destroying the planet, nuclear has no such emmissions, (although it produces just as much water vapor the most prevalent greenhouse gas).
I don't think the evidence is strong enough to support that, but it sure makes the local environment nasty as heck. You want an argument for clean energy, just hang out in NYC around 5 in the afternoon and see how well you can breathe. Then go to the middle of a corn field in Iowa and try the same exercise.
Transporting and disposing of the spent fuel is problematic, because nobody wants radioactive junk in their backyard, but proper precautions make it safe (whether those precautions are followed or not is better left to wiser heads than mine).
There is an unwholesome amount of usable data at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's website.
http://www.nrc.gov/
Please don't use anything you learn there to build your own reactor. It might make a fun project, but I don't think the Fed would like it.
Oh, and you can use it to treat various diseases. Most notably, it's had some great results with various cancers.

As of 2007, the IAEA reported there are 439 nuclear power reactors in operation in the world, operating in 31 different countries.
The United States produces the most nuclear energy, with nuclear power providing 20% of the electricity it consumes, while France produces the highest percentage of its electrical energy from nuclear reactors—80% as of 2006.In the European Union as a whole, nuclear energy provides 30% of the electricity. Nuclear energy policy differs between European Union countries, and some, such as Austria and Ireland, have no active nuclear power stations. In comparison France has a large number of these plants, with 16 currently in use.
Many military and some civilian (such as some icebreaker) ships use nuclear marine propulsion, a form of nuclear propulsion.
International research is ongoing into different safety improvements such as passively safe plants, the use of nuclear fusion, and additional uses of produced heat such as the hydrogen production (in support of a hydrogen economy), for desalinating sea water, and for use in district heating systems.

You have few good and correct answers they are short and simple but I do have an article written on this subject which I will include as soon as I can find the file.

What happens in a nuclear fusion reaction????
In layman terms.
It takes more energy to get the reaction going, so far only power burst are achieved, continuous reaction has eluded the best known reactors, in the best known laboratories and research facilities.
Hydrogen bomb is the example of this reaction, so it is so far useful only in weapon system.
There are various program to generate electricity from this type of reaction but there is no end in sight yet. It does not create much atomic waste, in this you are trying to generate energy by fussing the atoms together.
Fission is a process opposite of fusion, it relies on breaking down of an atom of a radioactive element of higher atomic number to lesser number elements, resulting in a radio active or non radioactive elements. All reactors in the world that produce electrical energy for the electrical grids all over the world are using this method of producing the heat, this heat is used to generate steam and the turbines are powered by the steam to produce electricity by turning the generators.
Both produces usable heat.
The only continuous reactor that uses fusion as the method of producing energy continuously is our sun. It is doing it for a long, long time, non stop.

The heat generated by a nuclear fission reaction is usually used to create steam to turn a turbine generator and produce electricity. After that, it's pretty much like any other electric power generation station and it can supply electric power to any electrical device.

Energy cries Aries now days....In order to reduce it v r going for nuclear plant.....Men using nuclear energy not only for war but also to full fill their needs......
using nuclear reactor they can generate energy by using fission process in which it can be utilise for electricity...v can able to generate very high energy from nuclear reactor....even though it is harm to mankind but v don't have any other better way to go...............

-it is used to generate electricity tru nuclear power plant by nuclear fission reaction(spliting of atoms)
-hydrogen bombs for destruction by nuclear fussion reaction(combining the atoms)
radioactive elements are used for this..
-it is also used to treat cancers, tumors and some diseases in medical field.
-nuclear energy is used as a power to propel the ships but it is not accepted widely because of radiation hazards and for safety reasons
nuclear energy is used for both constructive and destructive purposes

Nuclear can be used for-
- PEACE
- ATOM BOMB.
None right to make ATOM BOMB other the first sole user of atom bomb ( USA used against JAPAN).
All can use it for PEACE (except propieter user- USA).
Like [POOR india is making deal with USA for peaceful use by POOR Indian.
Why?
INDIA GO NUCLEAR - Why, How, When What ?
TO MEET ENERGY NEED AFTER 60 YEARS India shall go nuclear and sign treaty like 123 / NPT.
Is nuclear deal of India with US is really worth? It worth down the line of 50 - 60 years.
[A}.-Why worth ?
1) Fossile fuel is limited in INDIA and world.,
2) Nuclear fuel is also limited in INDIA AS WELL AS in world but can give enrgy for some years.
[B]. - Con of Nuclear?
Cost of coal based power is Rs 1.50 / KWHcompared to Rs 3.00 /KWH for nuclear.
Like petroleum, Foreign currancy will goout for
1). TECHNOLOGY,
2). FUEL,
3). INSPECTION,
4). EQUIPMENT, ETC
5) dependent on other
6) Possible stopage of fuel on later date (like USA stopped for TARAPUR UNITS, canadian STOPPED FOR RAWTBHATA UNITS)
[C]. - Options for INDIA ?
OPTIONS with little or no foreign currancy OUTGO:
1) WIND mill with limitless energy
2) HYDRAL with limitless life span,
3) SOLAR with limitless life,
4) Municipal waste with limitless life,
5) Agriculture waste WITH LIMITLESS LIFE
6) COAL
7) GAS
OPTION WITH FOREIGN CURRANCY OUTGO:
1) NUCLEAR
2) PETROLEUM
[D] Why 50 - 60 years?
Now INDIA MAY SURVIVE with coal and gas, but after 60 years WIND, SOLAR, HYDRAL, WASTE cannot give sufficient energy for the INDUSTRY.
[E].- What is the option ?
INDIA SHALL USE NUCLEAR OPTION FOR ENERGY GENERATION
[F] What is about foreign currency, dependence?
1). SINCE 50 - 60 YEARS is long. INDIA SHALL EXPLORE IT'S 1800 KM by 2000 km land surface, 100 - 2000 km on sea bed to check if urenium can be extracted economically.
2) USA has formed NSG with 50 countries to deny access to nuclear fuel to countries like NDIA. World has 120 - 150 countries. INDIA can make an extensive search for URANIUM in the remaining POOR countries. It will help that POOR country for their economic unliftment and HELP india to gel fuel. But how does it stop the foreigncurrency outgo? Since these poor contries need is limited to " ROOTI-KAPDE-AUR-MOKAN", in which INDIA is strong enough; it can exchagne those goods with NUCLEAR FUEL ( if available). Since these poor countries does not have economical, technological capability, they will welcome help from INDIA.
[G]. Why this deal ?
If INDIA refused to this proposal, OPTION as in [F] above can not be materialised? Why? Since USA is WORLD DADA, it will influence other ( 125-50 = 75) countries not to allow INDIA for exercising OPTION [F]
[H].- Conclusion ?
INDIAN has no option but to sign the deal.
