hi.so in a class of mine our teacher asked us to make groups of 2-3 people, find a subject we like and write a paper on it by doing a 3 month research.my friend and I chose piercing and tattoos because we both have piercings and know a guy that works in a tattoo and piercing shop.but we don't know how to develop the subject.we already thought of doing reasearch on:
>history of piercing and tattoo
>the dangers
>mini-interview from the guy we know
>some pictures maybe

but these are very few.do you have anything else to suggest?not another subject, but more things about it.also,if u know any sites with information, please tell me!

thank u all

Piercings and tattoos are very diverse....how long is the paper to be? I would choose one or the other OR if you include both, you should be all inclusive to all types of body modification. This includes cutting, branding, scarification as well as extreme forms of piercing.

This also should include cosmetic tattooing - a huge adaptation of the body art biz - and growing even faster.

You can get a lot of info from the major organizations for the industries -
APP, APT, NTA, SPCP

You might wish to address how different the regulations are from state to state as well.

Other areas to write on:
Harris Poll studies
The new Freedom 2 inks not yet on the market
Tattoo TV shows
Tattoo/piercing conventions

You could ask around at tattoo shops. When I was 16 I was friend with a few guys that worked in a family friend's tattoo shop and when I had to do a computer presentation of any subject of my choice I picked tattoos and piercings. I had photos of the guys, I asked patrons if I could film them and take pictures while they were being tattooed, I had a diagram of the tattoo gun, needles, sterilizer chamber, and some original tattoo designs from the guys to go along with pictures of finished tattoos of those designs, to show people how a tattoo starts out as just a sketch and then becomes a permanent piece of art. I outline intstructions of after care for piercings and tattoos. I listed the general names of different piercing, which gage needles are used for which piercing. I did search online, looking up specific subjects such as history of tattoos and piercings and other things like that. I went way over the top for my project but the teachers were impressed and gave me extra credit.

There have been so many books written on both subjects, but less on piercing, so at least by choosing that your research should take less time and wont be so confusing. Try and get a copy of The Eye Of The Needle by Pauline Clark and some of the Modern Primitive books, also try Jim Ward at The Gauntlet in San Francisco, he was possibly at the forefront of the modern acceptance and development of piercing.

Well if you deside to do history of piercings there is sooo much to know! And its very interesting! I did my gr 12 english presentation on it and it was crazy the amount of stuff I learned. My favorite was the tongue piercings; Roman priests use to pierce their tongues as a ritual to talk to their god. You'll find that a lot of them have to to with social standings. and eyebrow with be teh hardest to find b/c it didn't come about until the 80's. I think your best bet is history or an all you need to know about piercings; like healing process, what to look for in a shop, different types and a describtion of it, age to get it done, etc.

What about the taboo of them in the past versus its gradual clime to more of an acceptance in the mainstream. Or the types of styles...americana...hindu...budhist...japanese. There are so many types of styles and traditions behind tattooing. The best place to get your info is from people who tattoo and/or have been tattooed. Find people, they will be willing to talk to you. Just watch your information. A topic like this has a lot of information. You might want to pick between the two...tattooing or piercing..depending on which one you get the most info on.

The transformation from stencil w/ carbon dust, to ditto paper, to ink pen,
and sometimes now....4 lines.

Another would be..where fine-line tattooing came from.....California's prison system. Brought to the streets in Southern California by Goodtime Charlies Tattooland, Jack Rudy & Freddy Negrete, when they were in East Los Angeles, and another unknown shop,The Golden Dragon, in South Bay, Danny aka The Blindman, [closed in 1985],
starting in the mid-70's, where the motto was: Get a Jailhouse Tattoo, without going to jail......also this is when ditto-paper made its 1st appearance......

after history, the significance of tats in different societies. You can cover a few hundred words on what they mean in the US, in the Amazon, in Africa, in India etc. What is the difference between perm tats and henna tats in some cultures. Point out the hate from the concentration tattoos from Nazi Germany. You should be able to put a few thousand words for a tattoo essay

You can be almost pierced anywhere on your body.
I find them to be kind of psychologically addictive.
