I am not a huge fan of the Harry Potter books, but I do like the films. My question is this...why is every one so up in arms that one of the main characters is gay? I think it is stupid! Christian groups are so up set that Dumbledore is gay, but I thought they did not read the books because it promoted witch-craft? AHHHH I am Christian and I am tired of the ignorance, and the petty causes Christians fight for, are there not more pressing issues in the world other than a gay fictional character in a book they are not supposed to read? Christians wonder why people look at us like inbred, ignorant, boarder line retarded, jerks! Please tell me I am not the only one who feels this way!

You're not the only one who feels that way.

I have this friend (well, she's married to my husband's friend so we're apparently supposed to be friends) who actually called me in a panic to "warn" me never to buy Harry Potter books for my son because of the gay character. Then she kept asking me what was so funny.

She also thinks everyone who doesn't agree that public school children should be forced to pray to Jesus is against God. I once asked her if she thought the Jewish kids should have to pray too and she said they shouldn't be allowed to go to school with the Christian kids.

As a Christian I'm really ashamed of the ignorant, hateful people who represent my faith.

I'm trying to figure out what the big deal is. It's like when the Catholic church was so up in arms about Dan Brown's book (and later movie with Tom Hanks) the DaVinci Code. Where are these books found in any library. THE FICTION SECTION!!! What part of the definition of "fiction" is the church missing??

I was always taught that books were supposed to expand your mind (horizons, imagination, etc), vocabulary, literacy, and make you think on your own. And they are good and fairly inexpensive entertainment.

Personally, I don't see the problem with Dumbldore being gay. Like someone else said, it wasn't obvious when you read the books so why is it such a big deal now?? What difference does it make? Unless there are more books to come and JK Rowling is setting the stage for bigger "issues" in the books??

I think all of the groups that are up in arms about "witchcraft" or a main character being homosexual are missing the bigger picture:

We live in a world where most kids would rather watch TV or a movie then sit down and read a book. JK Rowling sparked something magical (to pardon the pun) when she first published Harry Potter. She got a generation (or two) of non-readers to pick up a book! And I have seen some of these children decide, on their own, to pick up others.

LOL, just read Kiddo235's post and I agree. I can't tell you how many times, in hot debate, I yelled out "It's FICTION you idiot!"

You're probably not the only one who feels that way. But usually - when people are fed up with their religion - they move on and find a different one that works better for them. Religion is simply a tool we use to understand and get closer to God. I don't think which religion matters. My Minister is a huge Harry Potter fan. In fact - a Harry Potter book was our "book of the month" - a few years ago - because he felt it had a lot of great Spiritual messages. My minister is gay. And I haven't talked to him - but he's probably quite happy that such a positive character has been named as gay - and maybe a little sad - that it wasn't a known fact in the books. I'm not gay - and I'm not that much of a HP fan at all. But - I'm really glad that I fit in at my Spiritual Center. That's important to me. Christians are doing what Christians need to do in order to feel okay about themselves. Very often - I've observed - that means they live strictly by their interpretation of the Bible. Being gay (even for a fictional character) cannot be promoted or accepted - because the Bible says it's wrong. Christians live by the Bible. They choose to do so - and it works for them. If you no longer want to live that way - move on. Namaste!

I agree with you! My son is nine and is on the 5th book now. I think that any book that gets kids to read without using swearing or sexual matters is good! He has many friends whose parents don't let them read the Harry Potter books. One of his friends was over at our house and his mother saw our Harry Potter movies and books [I've read and seen them all] and said how terrible they are and the books teach kids to go against God. After she left her son went crazy and started throwing stuff in my son's room. He almost started a fire because he put paper in my son's lamp and it's up high because my son's lamps are on the wall. He then proceeded to cuss and hit my son. Then he told us about how he plays Halo at home and these other violent games. I don't understand why they think it's ok to play violent games but it's not ok to read a book.

I also think that JK Rowling just said that to get people to read the book. Not ONCE did they say that the man is gay. It doesn't point to any facts of him being gay. There is no evidence in any of the books. I read them all.

I am Christian. I have no problems with gays. I have no problems with witches who are good witches....or warlocks. I have no problem with fictional characters in a good book or movie, either. It is just silly to get upset over any of these things.

If you look hard enough for something you can usually make it appear to exist. Rather than practice love thy neighbor and treat others as you would like them to treat you, some Christians have taken on the role of denouncing others for their views and lifestyles. I seem to remember a man called Adolph Hitler who also followed this practice. I must be a liberal Christian because I believe in looking for the good in others, forgiving discretions and minding my own business. What I believe is between me and my God and hopefully he will be proud of the way that I conduct my life.

It does not matter to me, as it was not a point made in any of her books, but why even bother to put it out there? If his sexuality isn't important enough to be explained in the books, why is she bringing it out now? I think maybe she is looking for another reason for groups to protest. Any time some group protests, more tickets sell, and more books sell.

I think its always important for people to remember not to blame a whole group for a few irrationals;, do I believe in witches? ghosts? ghouls? homosexuality? no, but is it my life? no, I'm a christian, I believe in god, I believe in Jesus, I believe that as a believer I should follow them to the best of my ability, if I feel something is wrong...I stay away from it, I explain to my children why I stay away from it and then let them make their choices, I explain why I believe, and then let them make their choices, so I agree with a few others on here, if you don't like it, or don't agree with it....don't watch it, don't read it, don't listen to it.

as for why some parents are in an uproar about a character being gay?......this is a fantasy book and movie, not just adults are reading it and watching it, so.....it becomes a little upsetting when you have to explain to a 6 year old what a gay person is., her questions now are "so girls can kiss girls?" "guys can kiss guys?" "can they get married?" I would never have a problem if my child was gay..I would love my child no matter what, even though I don't agree with it, and would try to help her to make sure that that was her orientation was, I also in likeness do not want her becoming confused, homosexuality as I understand it, or as homosexuals keep telling us is not a choice, that they don't have a choice in the way they feel, but with todays youth I fear some of them are becoming confused with feelings and choices, I don't want my daughter to become confused with "well its okay for those girls to kiss, we should except everyone" to "oh, so its okay for me to kiss girls" and I think thats where some parents are getting upset, how do you explain to some of these kids that homosexuality is nothing to be afraid of, theres nothing wrong with it, it should be exceptable, but only if you truly feel that way? how do we explain to them choice over not being able to help the feeling? theres nothing wrong with being gay, I can totally see with today on medical terms x chromosomes getting mixed up with the y's, but....how do you explain to the kids "yes honey, its okay, but not for you unless you were born that way?

You would not believe how happy it makes me to see such a good number of open minded Christians. Guess their will always be the close minded ones who give the good ones a bad name.
I must commend you and thank you for being so open!
