There's a few ways to do this.
1. Get a flea collar. Most cats hate this and will do anything to get it off.
2. Get drops for the back of it's neck. Make sure you get the CAT drops and not the dog drops. Dog drops will kill a cat. Make sure you put it at the right location so the cat doesn't turn around and try and lick it off. This will make the cat sick.
3. Get some flea shampoo. If you have a hand held shower head, remove the shower head from the hose. Fill about 6 inches of warm water into the bath tub. You will have to hold the cat firm while washing it. Be careful not to get any shampoo in it's eyes. Rinse by turning on the warm water to the hose with just light pressure. Rinse the cat completely. When finished, place the cat on pre-placed towels and wrap it up. DO NOT let it run away wet. Massage the cat with towels until the majority of the water is gone. It will look really bad wet, just so you know. Then let it go and it will give itself a bath and look pretty again in an hour or so. Keep talking to the cat calmly during the entire process. Be prepared for some scratches. This really is a last resort and fairly dangerous for your hands and arms (and anything else the cat can reach if you're not careful). I've done this to all of my cats multiple times (they're indoor/outdoor) whenever they get really infested beyond the point of some flea drops. They get used to it after a while as long as you're patient and don't yell at them when you're washing them.

The best way to get rid of fleas to to buy Revolution of Frontline from your vet. Do not use over the counter flea remedies (such as flea collars) as they contain toxins. Putting the cat outside will only cause your cat more fleas, as this is where the fleas come from. After you have gotten medication from your vet, wash all linens and vacuum.
DO NOT SPRAY YOUR CAT WITH RAID!!!

A long time ago when our house became infested with fleas, my grandmother placed a shallow dish of Dawn dishwashing liquid under a chair that our pet frequented. Then she took one of those bendy-neck desk lamps and directed the light over the dish. The fleas thought the heat was coming from an animal/human and jumped right in the dish. Each day we just emptied the dish until the fleas were gone. It only took a few days max for them to all be gone. If you have heavy infestation I would suggest multiple traps. PS. Use Original Dawn. No bleach or scrubbers.

Putting the cats out won't help if you haven't treated them.
You need to get a proepr treatment from the vets, for your cats and for your house. Frontline, Advantage or Revoltion spot-ons for your cats - get it on their skin, not their fur. And get a decent spray for the house.
