Since dogs have very sensitive ears the high pitched sound that comes from a vacuum is what bothers them. Same as anything else with loud or high pitched noises. Like remote control cars, and whistles. They also don't react when you yell at them, which is why when telling them no or out, you say it in a stern voice not an overly loud one.

Dogs don't 'hate' - that is a human emotion. Some will be fearful and run away while others will become defensive and attack but it isn't all dogs by any stretch . I have never actually owned a dog that went after or avoided a vaccum cleaner or a lawn mower but have seen, worked with and know of those that do. I even had an extreemly sound sensitive dog once and she never was bothered by vacuums or mowers so I don't think it has much to do with the sound alone but with other things, maybe vibration, the fact that the owner is 'fighting' with it and it is 'growling' back or something ... different things to different dogs but usually it is simply the owner has more or less 'trained' the dog to be fearful of it and rewarded or allowed to continue undesireable behavior as the behaviors tend to escelate over time.

In addition to the obvious issue of being loud, I believe the high speed fans used to create the vacuum give off ultrasonic or high pitched noise unheard by the human ear but painfully loud to a dog. Like a dog whistle, silent to man but loud to the dog. I've also noticed my dogs react to turbocharged trucks on the highway. I believe it is the high-pitched whine given off by the turbo same as a vacuum. My dogs always jump when we pass a turbocharged tractor-trailer.

Ha! My dog is terrified of the vacuum. They have really sensitive ears and I think it bothers them. Plus, its this loud monster-looking machine chasing them around, you'd be scared too! My dog hides if we even open the closet that we keep the vacuum in.

They're extremely loud and they go around sucking stuff up (you would be afraid too if you were dog!) And it's not just dogs that don't like vacuums (kids, cats,me)

Mine don't have a problem with vacuum cleaners.. That's a pretty broad question.. I don't think all dogs hate vacuums at all ....

My mixed-breed dog just leaves the room when I run it. She's not afraid of it, nor does she seem to particularly dislike it, she just gets out of the way.

My Setter, on the other hand, actually LIKES it and tries to engage it in play. He'll do a play-bow in front of, wag his tail, and pounce at it. He thinks it's just a loud playmate and he gets bummed when I turn it off and it doesn't wanna play anymore!

Dogs have very sensitive ears. The noise probably bothers them.
