It is interpreted from passages that are impossible in our universe.

The sun moves and not the earth:

Joshua 10:12-13
Then spoke Joshua to the Lord in the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the men of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel, "Sun, stand thou still at Gibeon, and thou Moon in the valley of Aijalon." And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.

Ecclesiastes 1:5
The sun rises and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises.

The earth is stationary:

1 Chronicles 16:30
tremble before him, all earth; yea, the world stands firm, never to be moved.

Psalms 93:1
The Lord reigns; he is robbed in majesty; the lord is robbed, he is girded with strength. Yea, the world is established; it shall never be moved.

Psalms 96:10
Say among the nations, "The Lord reigns! Yea, the world is established, it shall never be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity."

It is planted in a foundation:

2 Samuel 22:16
Then the channels of the sea were seen, the foundations of the world were laid bare, at the rebuke of the Lord at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.

Psalms 18:15
Then the channels of the sea were seen, and the foundations of the world were laid bare, at thy rebuke, O Lord, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.

Psalms 102:25
Of old thou didst lay the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of thy hands.

Proverbs 8:27-29
When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth,

Isaiah 48:13
My hand laid out the foundation of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I call to them, they stand forth together.

John 17:24
Father, I desire that they also, whom thou hast given me, may be with me where I am, to behold my glory which thou hast given me in thy love for me before the foundation of the world.

The Earth is flat (you cannot see the entire Earth because it is round):

Job 28:24
For he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees everything under the heavens.

Psalms 19:4-6
yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes forth like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and like a strong man runs his course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them; and there is nothing hid from its heat.

Daniel 4:10-11
The visions of my head as I lay in bed were these: I saw, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth; and its height was great. The tree grew and became strong, and its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the end of the whole earth.

Matthew 4:8
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them;

Isaiah 40:22
It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in;

There are about another fifty passages relating to either the flat Earth, the water around the Earth (blue sky was mistaken for waters in the Hebrew), the stars are fixed lights, the Earth sits on pillars (which is why it shakes during earthquakes), there is an ocean under the Earth (there are archaeological finds of Jewish worship of the creatures of this underground sea), God keeps the upper water back by using windows, the Earth has ends and isn't round.

Gallileo was tried for proving about 50 bible verses false and being too noisy about it.

Job 38:13 says the earth is flat. Job 38:4 says the earth is stationary, too. There is also a story about the sun not setting during a long day of battle in Joshua. It sounds like the earth stopped rotating, something I find hard to believe. I don't think the Old Testament writers were experts in Astronomy by any means. Modern Bible scholars have to come up with long rationalizations for such scientific errors.

The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty;
the LORD is robed in majesty
and is armed with strength.
The world is firmly established;
it cannot be moved.

Psalm 93:1

The above verse clearly says that the world is still and this links can be linked to Psalm 19:1-6 (Mainly verse 6),the passage also clearly says that the sun does move around the earth.

The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they display knowledge.

There is no speech or language
where their voice is not heard.

Their voice [b] goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,

which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion,
like a champion rejoicing to run his course.

(6) It rises at one end of the heavens
and makes its circuit to the other;
nothing is hidden from its heat.

Psalm 19:1-6

In relation to your second question on the earth being flat. This is a more complicated issue. There have been many interpretations and different verses in the Bible used to suggest that either the earth is flat or round. I think the answer to this question needs much more research.

Sun rises in east and sets in west, does this means sun rotates the earth? Even Galileo's and his father would have said sun rises and sets. Joshua 10- 12:13 mean to say their was longer sun light to end the war completly. The Bible only teaches us what are sins and how you can repent on it. And it's not book of science. It was written by humans who experienced god our father. You wanna know completly about Bible , then you should die and learnt it spiritually. Once you think you got more wisdom then your friends yours lost in darkness.

Isaiah 40:22 " It is He who sits above the circle of the earth...", this was when everyone thought the world was FLAT
Job 26:7 "He stretches out the north over empty space And hangs the earth on nothing." (describing the orbit of the earth)

Yes, both statements about the bible are true.
In spite of the Bible Believers trying to dance around and making stuff up trying to cover for the Bible, that is indeed what the bible says. The bible also makes other even more inaccurate statements.
This is really just a problem for the Bible literalists. Almost anybody else would accept that the authors were using common references and figures of speech. The writers of the bible likely did believe in those descriptions, but it would have been the common view and it is still how most of us view the world.

The atheists though, they love making a point about this because it drives the fundies nuts trying to defend their literal interpretation of the bible

If you look in Revelation you will find that the Earth is square with angels posted at its 4 corners(N,S,E+W) to hold back the winds.

Only when it is misunderstood or taken out of context.... The ancient catholic church did both of these regularly, as did many others. The "scientific community" of the past is full of twisted views of reality as well. Remember all those guys that tried to find a "recipe" for gold? (alchemists)

As for flat, the ancients KNEW the shape of the earth. A Greek mathematician "specialized" in geometry and primes named ERATOSTHENES CALCULATED the equatorial circumference of the earth... a task I hated trying to reproduce :-\

He died around 200 B.C., so obviously people in Jesus' day knew a lot more than most "moderns" give them credit for.

The unscientific or rather anti-scientific teachings were the work of the catholic church, mostly of the Middle Ages and Renaissance eras, who forced science to "forget" a lot of the things it knew. They are NOT based in the Bible!

The Bible is not a science manual. Nor is it a historical text, or anything else but fiction meant to teach children about morals and ethics.

I do not know the location of the verses but Galileo was put in house arrest for the rest of his life by the church for saying the Bible was wrong and the sun was the center of the of the solar system not the earth.

Just something I wanted to point out regarding the scriptures referenced in the previous answers:
Psalms is a book of poetry, not a book of science.
The four corners of the earth is a metaphor that is still used today for N/S/E/W.
The verses mentioning seeing all the earth/land/world is based on perspective. Seeing "all the earth" from one point, is all you can see from that point.
The earth is in place, or firm is referring to the land in which his chosen people occupied. Kind of like the floor you're currently on is firm, hopefully isn't moving.
Lastly, Job 26:7 says: "He stretcheth out the north over empty space, and hangeth the earth upon nothing."

So the references to the pillars, and flat earth, and portals for rain, windows and whatnot, I'd like to know the scriptures for that, please.
