One more thing that can cause back ache is kidney stones. I have passed stones (Sharp back pain lasting a few hours) and will be going in for surgery soon to have a very large stone removed. This large stone has caused daily persistent back pain for over a year. The pain is not as sharp as passing a stone, but is still very painful.

Simple backaches could be from the chair your sitting in, the way you sit. The way you sleep. The list could go on and on.

You could also have a number of back problems from a "bulging disc" to a ruptured disc, a herniated disc, any one type of related disc diseases.
I would suggest you see your primary physician first, he may or may not take X-Rays, he might send you for MRI's or he just might send you to a orthopedic surgeon for further testing.
