My step-dad switched from the Navy to the Army. He did this when the Navy enlistment was up. I don't think it was possible to do it in the middle of an enlistment time.

On a case by case basis. i.e. It is easier for a Navy Jet pilot to cross to the Airforce. But it would take more extensive training for an Air Force Pilot to cross to the Navy. Air Force pilots don't know how to land on Aircraft Carriers, so they would have to do lot s of training and that is expensive! It also depends on the type of aircraft. ie. It would be very simple for a Navy helo pilot (H-60) to cross to coast guard (H-60).

Permanent switching is quite rare. The services tend to use different types of aircraft with different (and expensive) training. Plus there is significant interservice rivalry and politics.

What is fairly common is joint or exchange assignments where a pilot from one service may spend 2-3 years working with a unit from a different service. But then he/she goes back.

I would think that you would have to finish one enlistment first before you sign up for another branch of the service. The military invests a lot of time and money to train a pilot. They expect a certain amount of your time in return for that training and education.
