i was on dialysis for 4.5 yrs and i ended up getting a cadavar kidney (from a deceased person)people dont know what it is like to be a on a machine for 15 hrs a week doesent sound like alot of time but when u get off you are so tired even the next day some are so tired at times u dont have time for ur family because u r so tired all time so please help and become a donor so many are liveing on these machines visit a dialysis unit to see what its like and get one of the nusres to explain what the machine does speak to someone on dialysis learn more about haveing to watch what you drink and eat its so hard on people and there other things people can donate but its mainly kidneys thank you for listening

People are scared to donate because they don't know the facts.
Not knowing the facts also influences people not to donate in other ways. Mostly people don't donate because they think they're too old or too sick. Most don't know that we have donors upt o 80 years old, and that only Metastasized cancer and AIDS are automatic rule-outs.
Have you offered to become a volunteer at your organ recovery agency to help teach your community about organ donation? Have you written to your DMV and thanked them for handling the organ donation registry for your state (if they do) or asked them why they don't (if they don't).
What many people waiting for a kidney don't know is that living donations are a great answer for the shortage of kidneys. Livers can also be donated in life, but only in specific cases. Have you gone back to your dialysis center to talk to those people you knew for 15 years about living donation?
As a transplant recipient who obviously wants to encourage people to sign up to be donors, I encourage you to volunteer your time to teach others about donation.
Your donor would be proud.
(P.S. We no longer use the term cadaveric, as that is a medical term, and we don't want to scare the lay people away. Just say a donated kidney from a deceased donor - people will understand you better.)

Many people don't sign the back of their drivers licenses for organ donation because there is fear that maybe the doctors wouldn't work as hard to save their life if they were in an accident. They would see you not as a person but as an "organ donor".

Some people are simply not comfortable donating parts of thier bodies... My whole family believe that you may need your "bits" when you get where your going when you die... I on the other hand am a registered organ donor.. Except for my eyes.... I don't like the idea of not having eyes...

Really I don't think alot of people/families are comfortable with subjects pertaining to death and organ donation. I encourage everyone to have open discussions about your wishes during your lifetime when its not an issue...therefore preventing your family and friends from having to make those decisions during the difficult time immediately following your death.
The selfless act of another to allow the organ donation of their family member....gave me my mother for 5 more years! Those years were priceless to me and the rest of my family. God Bless that anonymous donor!

Good question. I made it a point to register on line for organ donation. For myself, and my 3 oldest children. It's my 'peace of mind' decision which I made while I am of sound mind. And that little pink sticker on one's drivers license ISN'T enough. You MUST register with your state's Organ Donor Registry.
Does that make sense?

Very well said, I have it on my license that I will donate all organs but this last month I had to renew it and the DMV lady told me that it wouldn't be enough and that I needed additional contracts or will living will provisions stating the same....I had no clue....thanks and good luck with your new kidney....!!!!!

You just made me so depressed..my dad will have to be on dialysis soon.. he has PKD....and I probably do as well...I wish more ppl did donate organs...I'm so happy everything worked out for you and I hope it continues too..

I donate my hair. My whole body is up for donation, except my eyes, as I got LASIK, should I die young & my body is good to use the organs for others. I cannot imagine why people don't want to donate their organs. If they care for their bodies, & die young, their family should seriously consider organ donation. Dead people don't need their bodies anymore. Our souls are eternal & our bodies will rot in the grave.

i am happy for you man that you finally get a donor... probably people that is scared in donating their organs is because they just imagining that some part of them will be taken off
