are they in hell?

after all, before the Bible "mysteriously" appeared, there's no Bible to "instruct" people to call themselves 'born-again' to enter heaven.

what happened to those people's souls, are they in hell?

Yep, screw them... screw the people who lived in Asia and Australia and all those far out places... too bad if the missionary's arrived to save them only a hundred years or so ago... limbo has got to be pretty damned crowded by now, because an awful lot of people have been inhabiting the world for a very very long time....

Funny what some people believe eh?

They're only in Hell if they died without salvation. Before Jesus' crucifixion, animal sacrifice as recorded in the Old Testament was the method for atonement (forgiveness) of sins. People that lived and died under that dispensation of law are in Heaven IF they lived the lives prescribed by the law in between each Passover season.

Dante acknowledges in his work Inferno. Those who died before the coming of Jesus are supposedly in Limbo, which is neither heaven nor hell (but it is right outside the gates of hell)
