i want to know why the books tell you to hit your 16 against a dealers 17 or more. (when the up card is 7 or more) When the dealer gets a 16 we cant wait for them to hit because we want them to bust... why would we take the chance on busting, when if we play it safe, wouldn't we at least have the chance to stay in the game.?? this never made sense to me if a dealer has a good chance at busting, we would too right???

Here's another perspective on why to hit your 16 versus a dealer 7.... The house has to hit his 16, and so should you. If it were in the favor of the house to stand on 16, they would. Someone at some point in time has crunched a lot of statistical numbers to come up with the odds of the house and the best way for the house to play. Same logic holds with soft 17.

However, if you do decide to stand with 16, always stand on 16.

When a dealer has 7 or higher showing, the odds are that the dealer will NOT bust.

If you stand on 16, you're basically giving up on the hand. It's true you only have a 5 out of 13 chance to improve your hand, and an 8 out of 13 chance to bust. But it's still better than hiding in the corner and hoping the dealer busts.

This is also why you should surrender when the dealer has a 10 or Ace showing, if it's allowed at the casino. At least then, you'll only lose half a bet.

And I don't care how long anybody has been a dealer. Do NOT automatically assume that the dealer has a 10 or A in the hole. You'll be wrong 8 out of 13 times.

Learn and follow basic strategy. It has been developed over many years by mathematical experts who have studied and played the games.

It is a common misconception that basic strategy assumes the down card is always a 10, and that's why you should hit in this situation, or any situation where you have less than 17 and the dealer shows a 7 or better.

In reality, the entire basic strategy card was made by running through every possible combination of cards, and then determining which play will win most often.

So when basic strategy tells you to hit a 16 against a dealer 7, it's because you are more likely to win than if you stand. This particular hand is very close to even, but you still have a slightly better chance of winning if you hit.

If the dealer has a 7,8,9,10,J,Q,K,A showing you should 92% hit 16. Rarely rarely should you stand on 16 vs those cards if you are card counting thats where the other 8% comes in...otherwise you hit.

If the dealer has 7-8-9-10-J-Q-K showing all he needs is a 10 under and you lose.

Standing on 16 isn't that bad of a play I mean people won't be like YOU HIT 20! But you should hit 16. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS FIGURE THE DEALER FOR A HAND...do not play and hope the dealer bust because the dealer will make 70% more hands than she bust.

I was a blackjack dealer for 5 years and you should always assume the dealer has a ten or face card in the hole. So, you want your 16 to beat the dealers assumed 17. Also, they say you should make a commitment to either always hit your 16 or if you choose not to then you should never hit it. Reality is that all gambling is set up for the house to profit, how else could they afford the gorgeous facilities that they have, they also pay the staff really well.
