Occasionally, as parents increase the time they wait before responding, their child cries so hard he throws up. If that happens, go in even though the time isn’t up yet. Clean your child up and change the sheets and pajamas as needed. But do so quickly and matter-of-factly, and then leave again.”

This would be a dangerous scenario. The child could aspirate his/her vomit and become very ill, or possibly die. I would not let the situation go this far. I rocked my children a lot, and held them when they cried, although the so-called "experts" advised against this.

They are now teenagers and have fond memories of their childhood, and of a mother who was loving towards them, especially during times of fear and loneliness. Babies have those feelings and need to feel secure, with lots of touch and hugs.

When I was reading Ferber, which was the only thing that worked with my kids, although at different ages, he firmly recommended no more than twenty minutes of crying. That wasn't enough to make most kids throw up. It's good to remember that each child is an individual and not everything works for everybody. Even Dr. Ferber himself cautions that his methods are not for everyone.

I used the Ferber method for my daughter and she cried a lot the 1st day but never threw up, it actually worked pretty well for me to the pint she was sleeping on her own by the 4th day. Remember that we don't need to generalize, it is clear that only one method is not the answer for everyone, that's why there are different alternatives to use. Not all babies/parents are suitable to follow the method. As parents we need to trust our instincts and figure out what's best for our little ones.

But some toddlers learn to throw up as controlling behavior. They throw up, you clean up AND CONSOLE, thus they get the secondary gain.

I understand your point, and it can be a very difficult issue. But no, Ferber is not a moron.
