Some kind of sugar substitute is used. Phenylalanine is a compontent of the artificial sweeteners containing aspartame, which is the sugar substitue. You can do a web search for both phenylalanine and aspartame to find out more.

Phenylalanine is an amino acid used to form proteins. Most "No Sugar" food products are made with sugar alcohols, which have a slower absorbtion rate than white refined sugar, or high fructose corn syrup. This slower absorption rate makes it possible for Diabetics, or people suffering from hypoglycemia, to enjoy sweetened snacks and beverages when their bodies can not tolerate regular sugar, or high fructose corn syrup.
