He is well ahead in this year's Nextel Cup without the Chase. With Hendrick Motorsports dominating again (not that I mind), is the Chase really going to benefit from the same teams winning? This is Gordon's 2nd time(2004) he will likely end with the most points with the traditional style. If traditional points still played like in Petty's and Earnhardt's times, the Nextel Cup world would be talking about Gordon tying the 2 legendary drivers with 7 Cup Championships. Anyone else still not a fan of the new Chase points system. I personally am not a fan of the top 12 starting at the same amount of points + win bonuses. The original system where there was a difference between 1st and 2nd sounds more logical still.

Though not a Gordon fan I do like to see things happen. And this run for the 5th championship has been intresting to say the least. This year has shown the irregularities in the NASCAR chase.
In sports as in all life things happen to keep the favorite or deserving from acheiving their goal and if the "point" system of the chase fails this year it should be changed.
This was to open the field and to make for more intrest and the only thing it has done is to make the competition boring this year.
When the green falls at Daytona there are 43 cars that are in competition for the championship but the focus is lost on the race because everyone from broadcasters to fans to teams are making focus on the chase.
Race for 36 races and earn the points and the driver with the most points wins. This way it is up to the driver to lose and not to point to a team out of the chase as being the reason a contender loses.
Go back to the old days,
The fastest 43 race,no top 35 owner points for free rides, and no provisionals. And mostly race for the championship.
Good luck Jeff and team 24.

I like it more this year than in the past only because my favorite driver is leading. What I dont like is that only twleve drivers are eligable.

Yes, I know that under the old way it was pretty much sewn up and 13th place would have no hope at all of winning. But why not what if. What if the 13th place driver was only 5 points behind 12th at the end of the "regular" season. And what if that driver went on a tear "ala" Tony Stewart, and ended the season 10 points ahead of the winner. Of course I dont believe that would be possible with the top 12 starting at 5000, I'm just sayin is all.

Ok fine. As I am typing I realize that the main reason I want the old way to come back is because Jeff could come close to DNFing the rest of the races and still win...lol

So sue me! :)

And to those of ya'll that say HMS guys get all the covereage, so what? They are the ones winning. I remember when Stewart was winning, everything was about TOny...YOU might not, but thats the beauty of selective memory.

Exactly. I think that they have robbed Gordon of one to mayn championships and if they do it again its going to be chaotic and alot of people are going to be disappointed. Then again he is going to be happy because he will either win the championship himself or he will be the owner of the winning team. Either way he is going to be happy but I would love for him to have one Nextel Cup championship as would he before they change it to Sprint but I think that it would be a shame for him to lose another one, and even in 2004 he lost it by less then 10 points I believe, and had their been no chance he would have won it hands down.

I would think so. Jeff is working his a** off, and deserves this! He has a new family to look out for! People say he is a crybaby, well they are wrong! Take a look at Stewart a few years ago when he had that anger problem, Can anyone say: Temper Tantrum?

I wasn't going to answer this, I'll be honest. I don't care for the #24.

But I do agree with you on several points, first off the chase thing is totally stupid. The tradition did die with The Intimidator (agreeing with Cowboy here) and giving the top 500 the same starting point is like the begining of the season didn't count.

Now as far as the Chase benefitting from the same teams dominating, I don't think that the Chase is beneficial so what difference does that make?

(OH P.S. GO TONY GO!!!!!! heh heh)

Gordon will still be a legend like Petty and Earnhardt. When history talks about him, we still may hear that he could have won more championships under the old point systems. Maybe they will have an asterisk next to his name in the books. He will still be considered one of the best ever, and the best of his era.

I like the concept of the chase, but they change the rules every season to accommodate popular drivers. I personally think 12 is too much drivers, it allows for too much mediocrity. But drivers should be rewarded for wins. We would see better racing that way, I hate when drivers say they are "big picture" racing, it means they are being careful and boring. At least this way, they are out there to win.

I actually agree with a lot of what buckshot wrote--which surprises me,lol.
Gordon will go down in history as a legend, even if he doesn't get another championship--he is that darn good.
I agree that twelve drivers in the chase is too much. It's taken me a while to get used to the Chase concept, but I have to accept it, because it is part of the way things are done in NASCAR. I like the ten point bonus system for regular season wins, which means they do not start the Chase with even points.
What will be a shame is the way that Jeff and Jimmie are treating their team mate (Please don't race me, I want to win this race), Kyle, who is also in the Chase for the Championship. It wouldn't surprise me if Kyle behaves himself until the last race of the season--his last race with Hendrick, BTW, then ruins it for the prima donnas.

It will be horrible if he doeS NOT win after leading most of the year. He has the most top 5's and the most poles, and second in Wins. 24 RULES!!

Yes it will be a shame.

He did WAY better than the other guys in the chase.. but only seems like he's doing a LITTLE better. He earned it this year.

Go #24!!!!

If Gordon wins this Championship it should be his 6 one. He is the Greatest drive right now racing.
Nascar changed the point system so others would stand a change.
