The rapid spread in Latin America of the virus that causes AIDS is made worse by the Roman Catholic Church's stand against using condoms, a U.N. official said on Monday.
Some 1.7 million people across Latin America are infected with the HIV virus or full-blown AIDS, and the epidemic is spreading swiftly with up to 410,000 new cases in 2006, up from as many as 320,000 new cases in 2004, according the UN AIDS program, UNAIDS.

According to UNAIDS , If the people of Latin America used condoms the Aids Problem Transmission could be virtually eliminated immediatly . Clean needle programs have eliminated drug transmission . The Condoms are 99.9. effective in stopping transmission , because the sperm doesn't usually transmit the virus , it is the blood ( open sore ) on the penis that receives or transmits .

tur b what is wrong with promicuity and birth control ( condoms ) . Not talking about abortion . Don't tell me the Bible says so . It bans cheseburgers and B-B-Q Pork Ribs .
Last Ent : Even if you stopped all sex there would be transmission of disease Malaria from Mosquitos , Common Colds from handshakes , and so on . So that doesn't seem to be a reason to stop people from enjoying safe in a safer manner .

BAby saying that the Catholic Church is not responsible is like saying they wouldn't be responsible if they used their power to prevent speed limits on highways or traffic lights on corners . They are preventing people from obtaining the thing that will allow them to do what they think is right in a safer manner . If the Catholic Church doesn't think it's OK to drive or have sex , fine for them . But the people that do should have the safety that science can provide .

Simply put, NO.
ADDED: Some of the "Christian's" answers on here are really sad, hateful, and pathetic. "If they'd followed God's teaching, they wouldn't have AIDS, so let them die."
For example, "Maranatha" (below) said something very much like that, it's their own fault so too bad. She then said we should follow God's law (her interpretation of it, of course) and live forever.
Live forever? If I would be forced to live forever with Christians who are as judgemental and hateful as she is, and other Christians who answered this question are... Well, if that's what the people in Heaven are like, I'll take my chances in Hell.
The folks in Hell may have AIDS, may be gay, may be Buddhist or Hindu, may be young girls who were raped and had an abortion... but if they actually cared about others I'd much rather spend eternity with them, temperature notwithstanding.

The Catholic Encyclopedia states Bible is Skeptic and Concocted
A. THE FORMATION OF THE NEW TESTAMENT CANON (A.D. 100-220)
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03274a.htm
The idea of a complete and clear-cut canon of the New Testament existing from the beginning, that is from Apostolic times, has no foundation in history. The Canon of the New Testament, like that of the Old, is the result of a development, of a process at once stimulated by disputes with doubters, both within and without the Church, and retarded by certain obscurities and natural hesitations, and which did not reach its final term until the dogmatic definition of the Tridentine Council. ("Canon of the New Testament")
There is a lot of confusion about the earliest existing texts of the Bible. The oldest extant manuscript of the Bible is believed to be the Codex Vaticanus, (preserved in the Vatican Library), which is slightly older than the Codex Sinaiticus (preserved in the British Library), both of which were transcribed in the fourth century.
As for the story of Jesus, there were at least 50 gospels written in the first and second century CE. Four of them (Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John) were included in the official canon during the fourth century CE and are found today in every Bible. All of the original copies of the gospels were lost. What we have now are handwritten copies, which are an unknown number of replications removed from the originals.
Rudolf Bultmann, a prominent 20th-century professor of New Testament studies writes about the life of Jesus:
We can now know almost nothing concerning the life and personality of Jesus, since the early Christian sources show no interest in either, are moreover fragmentary and often legendary; and other sources about Jesus do not exist. (Bultmann 8)

The Church teaches chastity, reserving sex only for marriage. This policy is 100% effective in stopping the AIDS epidemic.
The only African country that has made significant progress toward reducing AIDS infection is Uganda. It's policy: chastity.

The world, ruled by sexual liberals, believes that young people copulate like cats and dogs, and that the only way to prevent VD is the use of condoms. Though most young people do not copulate like cats and dogs, sexual liberals (often in schools and other authoritative venues) send them a message that they EXPECT them to be promiscuous, and they provide instructions and equipment (condoms) for promiscuity.
Sexual liberals also tell young people that homosexuality is normal, that opposition to homosexuality is bigotry, and that any temptation to homosexual relations is a certain sign of predestination. Homosexuality causes the spread of AIDS (as the CDC calls it MSM--men having sex with men). Anal intercourse invites the HIV virus into the blood stream by damaging the fragile tissues in an area not designed for penetration. Thus, liberal action accounts for AIDS and other STDs.
That condoms willl prevent AIDS rests on a contradiction. On the one hand, we assume young men are so driven by sexual desires that they can't delay sex until marriage, or even a committed love relationship. On the other hand, we assume sexual pleasure is so inconsequential that a randy young man doesn't mind cancelling most of that pleasure by wearing a condom.
Next time you enjoy a nice steak dinner, try wearing a rubber glove over your tongue. I'm sure it won't detract one iota from the pleasure of eating.
Cheers,
Bruce

Remember, it is not the Catholic Church that spreads aids.
You can notice that church membership is decreasing in an alarming rate, where as HIV patients, homosexuals and Islam are increasing in an amazing rate.
May be the Catholic Church is responsible for it.

Is this the same U.N. that doesn't see Iran as a nuclear threat UNTIL they have a crap load of bombs?
Your reasoning is idiotic at best. The only clear way to avoid the spread of AIDS is to stop having sex. There is no other way.

Catholics aren't too fond of sex outside of marriage either, which is the REAL cause of the problem, wouldn't you say?
Since no birth control is 100% effective, even if everybody in the world used condoms and engaged in sex outside of marriage you would still have transmission of disease, wouldn't you?
EDIT
Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize we were discussing malaria. Would you like to discuss how the liberals banned the use of DDT which would have killed all those pesky malaria-carrying mosquitoes?
Stick to the point. We are discussing the transmission of AIDS here.
The AMA said that if everyone had sex with just ONE partner for the rest of their life, we would WIPE OUT AIDS in a single generation.
Beat that condom man.
EDIT EDIT
Oh if you really think that the Bible bans cheeseburgers and BBQ ribs, I would direct you to Romans chapter 14, verse 2:
"For one believes he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables."

The spread of the AIDS virus is due to the actions of the people themselves. If they remained in monogamous relationships, stayed away from the behavior that "promotes" the spread of the disease, condoms would not really be required. Obey God's law, and have life, Life Eternal.

The sad thing is, even in a marriage, if one person is unfaithful, they can bring home a disease to the other one. I personally feel birth control is between a husband and a wife. Unmarried people should not be having sex, but if they choose to violate God's word, then they should be using condoms. That's another area where the Pope is deluded.
