X and Flingeblu's answers are wrong, this is a misconception.
Weight training is considered the best possible exercise if done correctly and is recommended for all age groups, why?
Because it promotes good form and therefore doesn't damage joints, tendons etc like other aggressive sports.
It is controlled and progressive.
But it can be dangerous--form, form, form.
It is low stress on the body.
If you enjoy it I say yes. If it's because you are worried about your image then no, go find something you enjoy. Maybe rock climbing, or surfing, skating. You will build muscles and have fun!

Lifting heavy weights can have a negative impact on the skeletal (that is, your bones) development.

What is heavy body building? That is the fairly trick question. Basically the best approach is to get fit. Do lots of exericse, including ones that will increase muscle mass. Swimming is one such exercise. Doing 50 pushups is not really a problem, as it is not a heavy lifting workout.

However generally you want a total body workout, doing lots of things, and you should be looking to make it fun as well.

No.

It will stunt your growth - i.e - keep you short.

Crunches are fine. As is cardio and the like.

Hardcore bodybuilding and weights - no
