Depends on what branch and what rank of general.

Brigadier Generals, generally don't command, they are staff officers or assistant divison commanders.

Major Generals typically command a division 12,000 soldiers.

Lt. Generals typically command a a Corp, two to 5 divisions.

Generals typically command an Army, two or more Corp's or a Unified Command ( aka, pacific command, southern command)

But some in each rank are also staff officers.

It varies.

General Petreus was a 1-star in charge of the 104th and had about 1200 combat troops while taking back Fellujah.

I met a 2-star general whose job was to administer all of the DoD commissaries, and he probably had less than 20, but he had thousands of civilians under him.

A 4-star, like the Army Chief of Staff, will have the entire army under him.

(The guy above me is wrong about his chain of command. Everyone has at least two generals. For him, the CNO and the area commander, possibly more.)

5 1/2 years active duty, over 14 years in the reserves, but I never had a general in my chain of command. Then again I was in the Navy and the Naval Reserve. Whole lot of admirals, though.

If you get lucky enough and serve as an enlisted Flag officers aide, and he likes your work and you as a person, as long as he (The General) is on Active Duty, he will take you wherever he is assigned.
It also helps you get promoted-rapidly!
