My community (PQ) was evacuated already, it it's really close to RB and Poway. I'm at college right now in LA and I'm constantly calling my parents every couple hours. I don't think I can even sleep tonight. Almost all my friends back at SD have been evacuated already. I have a headache with thinking about it and I can't concentrate at all on hw.

I'm sure you're not the only one. Just settle down and if you get the order to evacuate then do it. You can prepare in advance so that you're packed and ready to go. Keeping busy with that might help your anxiety. In the meantime, just try not to be so upset about something that you have no control over.

Not being able to concentrate and being worried about the fires is the normal response to this type of thing.

You have to keep reminding yourself that people have been evacuated and are being evacuated, so, for the most part, the people will be ok.

I don't imagine your parents mind if you call, so just keep calling. Maybe tomorrow you could talk to someone at school, tell them what you've got on your mind, and see if you can take a day or two off.

These fires are a huge, historical, thing; so you wouldn't be normal if you weren't worried. I wish there were something I could say to you to make you feel better, but there just isn't. Its a huge thing and a huge worry. Just try to keep thinking about how they evacuate people and how - no matter how many homes are destroyed - things don't really matter.

Your parents are probably just as glad you're at school, so keep in mind that at least they have that much not to be worried about.

Hang in there. The people will be ok. Just keep in touch with your family. They almost certainly understand how difficult it is for you not to be there, seeing that they're ok.

This is the time to use calming techniques.
Your stress headache is an indication you need calming.

If and when you can sleep - that is best. Ask your mom to call you if she has any news to tell you.
Make sure you keep eating and drinking water - atleast a little something.

Ways of relaxing include a bath or shower.
calming music
old tv reruns (I love Lucy, comedies)
massage your feet or shoulders
reading a good book
prayer

If your thoughts keep cycling with worry, try writing them down, then close your notebook and set it aside. This should help you to be able to set your thoughts aside as well.

Katy, I live in Orange County and close to Irvine. I know how you feel........but, we all need to continue what we are doing on an every day basis. MY SON-IN-LAW IS A FIREMAN PARAMEDIC. HE IS IN THE CANYON AREA RIGHT NOW, fighting the fires. We all love him dearly, but he works his job with love. He called my daughter, his wife and told her that he is fine and they are working hard. Believe me, they are a band of brothers and they work with every inch of effort to stop the fires at every cost to themselves. It is quite smoky here, and certainly windy. It bothers me too, but I am continuing to work, and do my every day chores like normal. The only difference is that I have all doors closed and no windows opened....not even an inch, in our home. Your family/parents will surely keep you abreast of their situation, just as we would as a family to our kids. The thing that they both want for you right now is to not worry and complete your studies. Some of the things that they state on the news is extreme sometimes. Certainly the fires are aweful and the wind is out of control, but they are working every waking hour to keep things from getting worse.
