You get a really happy dog. You should really talk to the female's owner and work out some type of agreement. For the most part, the male doesn't really get anything out of the deal. Or that's how it goes for all the dog breeders that I do know. I think they usually get one pup of their choice. But of course, it all depends on different circumstances.
You can spay/neuter your dogs all you want and eventually no one will have any pets. That's just my opinion on that topic... unless you are offering to pay of course. If not, shut up and mind your own business.
Don't listen to all these over zealous holier-than-thous. If you see qualities in your dog that you would like to live on and know that you won't be able to find them elsewhere, go for it. Find a reputable breeder....perhaps where you got your dog in the first place...and they should be able to help you get started.

You can choose what you want, if you would like a puppy from the litter then you get to choose your own, you get first dibbs on a pup so dont let them try and say 'We were going to give that one to a friend' OR 'that pups already sold'.
you own the boy you ARE first in best dress.
OR
you can choose to have a stud fee, this is money to the value of one pup sold at full price. EG: if they sell 1/2 the litter for $100ea and the other 1/2 for $200ea you get $200, that would be the value of one pup.
There are other ways you can work out the stud payment but these are the most common, make sure you hve a written agreement signed by BOTH the stud owner (your self) and the ***** owner (owner of the female you wish to breed with).
it would also be best if you got this agreement witnessed, and fill it in before the mating, with subject to change - if you change your mind!
Although i must ask you to think, do you realy want to breed?
All the best,
Alex.

There are no ' rules ' you make the deal with he owner of the female..
If your male is a quality male, Ch, or other title, health testing all done, and he is a gorgeous dog.. You are going to breed him ONLY to a female worthy of him. Then you might want a pup back from the breeding.. Or you might want the stud fee. Usually the stud fee is equal to the price of what a Shih Tzu puppy sells for..
If you have a run of the mill Shih Tzu. no title, no health testing, and he is of questionable quality and you insist on breeding him... Take the cash, cause the puppies aren't likely to be worthy of keeping.. Considering the people who would breed with a male like that.. Their female isn't going to be quality so you don't even want to keep a puppy out of the breeding...

There are 1271 Shih tzus on Petfinder right now. Which ones were you planning on depriving of life so you can have puppies?
Very selfish, petulant, and immature to react this way to the people who answered your question truthfully.
You believe you love your dog, but you are far from convincing us of that.
Why ask the question if you don't want a truthful answer? Get some groupies if you only want validation of your plan.

Good thing you could care less about money because in the dog clubs I run with I know of several occasions in which a CHAMPIAN even a NATIONAL TOP 10 male was used as a stud to another an club members female, FREE. or just the cost of the males health tests. Of course a untitled dog is worth less as a stud than a national top ten so lets see less than free would be.....

You get a male Shih Tzu at higher risk of testicular cancer, a female Shih Tzu at higher risk of ovarian cancer, a free Shih Tzu pup, and whatever money that "someone else" decides to pay you. You also get to contribute to the huge puppy overpopulation problem.
If you "love your dog" you will know that breeding him when he is too old (older than 2 years is too old) will put him at risk of behavioural problems and various types of cancer later in life.
Basically, your dog loses out, the female dog loses out, and every puppy in American loses out. But you win! Yay!

If you are too obssesed about if you are going to get payed for it than that is not a good reason. You obviously are selfish by breeding and dont care about the risks you take by breeding your dogs. you are aware your dog could die if you try breeding right??

You get pick of the litter or a stud fee. Please make sure that the puppy that you pick stays with the mama for 6 weeks or so depending on the breed. I personally would take the puppy.

What's so great about your dog that he should be bred?
You ususally either get a stud fee (which won't be much if your dog isn't worth diddly poo - and since you have to ask on YA - I can tell you, you dog isn't worth diddly poo - why - he doesn't have his championship, he hasn't been shown, who knows if he is even breed standard). So - what you get is a free puppy - YAY!! And since you probably aren't doing genetic screening on your dog, and the *****'s mom probably isn't either - you might get a genetically tempermentally, physically screwed up puppy - sound like fun?
It's russian roulette when you haven't got a clue about what you are doing - I would worry a lot more about that than about being "cheated".

You get either stud fee or a puppy. Frankly, what is the reason you want your male as a stud? If you are not familiar with the game, maybe you shouldn't play the game. Is your male AKC registered? Do you have any genetic or physical testings performed? He's a purebred, it doesn't mean that you need to breed him. Please have him neutered.

A free puppy. Do what's best for the dogs! Have your pets spayed and neutered! There are too many unwanted pets that are euthanized, daily. Don't add to the over population of unwanted pets. Take care of your pet and love your pet. Don't look at it as a money making opportunity. Your pet is your companion and relies on you to give proper love and care.
