Walking is a great way. Changing your diet of course. Try drinking more water, it really helps shed the weight off and keep it off. Sit ups are wonderful for working your abs. I know a lot of people, men especially, really don't like Pilates but it's a great way to loose weight and build muscle tone. Good Luck.

My father has bad knees. The doctor told him to do a lot of swimming. He can also do some bicycling. You dont have to run to lose weight. You could probably do some pilates too.

Walking. If you are able to walk comfortably for 30 minutes a day, then do it.
Sit ups. I don't think they put much strain on the knees.
Diet, of course as well.

i swim 5-6 days a week, and i notice all types of injured/obese people swimming; it's easy on the body. they even have water aerobics where you strap on a floatation device around your waist, and follow an instructor's movements.
