"Most of the album's lyrics were dedicated to various people that lead singer Maynard James Keenan knew. The title of the album is ungrammatical French for 'sea of names' (the correct French would be 'Mer des Noms'). The track listing consists of various names such as 'Judith', 'Breña', 'Rose', 'Thomas', 'Magdalena', 'Orestes'. Some people consider this a possible motif for the album." "The songs 'Orestes' and 'Judith' were about Keenan's mother Judith Marie Garrison." "'Magdalena' was written about Mary Magdalene, a former prostitute turned faithful disciple of Jesus." I love "Magdalena", great song.
