as a western 22 yr old new convert to islam (im caucasian, american)....im wondering, if i start wearing hijab, would it be less eye-catching in the US to wear hijab but under a cute hat? i think this transition to hijab might be easier for me because i would get less stares and also b/c it would be less shocking to my christian family, but would it seem like i am rejecting islamic tradition by pairing the hijab w/ something western (by a western hat, i don't mean something stupid like a cowboy hat but rather something normal and matching)? my goal is NOT to attract attention to myself, which is the purpose of hijab. im interested in people's thoughts, serious answers only please, thanks.

Sister Vhershie, Assalamu Alaikum,
I say Yes by all means if you like it and it looks beautiful. Islam only teaches to cover your hair. It doesn't specifically requires you to wear scarf only and doesn't restrict you to have some fashion. A school female friend of my daughter in High school gave her a hat in her teen age days, she wore it on top of her black scarf. It did look nice. I still her picture with that hat some where.

Most american woman dont wear hats so you would attract attention just by wearing a hat other than a baseball cap or visor.

your pic. is cute...just do what is comfortable for you....if it is your convictions then follow them but realize you will attract attention....but the attention a modest woman gets is not the same that the immodest get...you will have respect, not lustful stares. well..i'm muslim..from malaysia..
fyi, u must understand what is 'aurat'..a limited body area which can be seen by peoples..for men, from belly to knee..but, for women, only face an their palms can be displayed for other..
so, u must understand this..
