Christ is the Head, and because of Him the whole body (the church) when doing their part, matures in love and truth.
My husband & I attended a church for a while where there was a lot of friction between the members & the pastor. Some people seemed to have their own ideas of how the church should be run and what the pastor should speak about. The pastor, who had served for 30 years, resigned because of all the dissension. The church is still interviewing for pastors, and as of this date have not decided on one. When my husband & I left this church for another one the membership had dropped from 100+ members at one point to 10.
A church cannot function the way it should when the members of His body are continually at odds with each other. It will not grow if there isn't a burden for the lost.

Eph 3 v 17 - Here it is not a question of His being in the believer, but rather of His feeling at home there! The Lord is a permanant resident in each saved person, but this is a request that He might have full access to every room and closet; that He might not be grieved by sinful words, thoughts, motives, and deeds; that He might enjoy unbroken fellowship with the believer. The Christian heart becomes the house of Christ, the place where He loves to be - like the house of Mary, Martha and Lazarus in Bethany. The heart, of course, means the center of the spiritual life; it contorls every aspect of behaviour. In effect, the apostle prays that the lordship of Christ might extend to the books we read, the work we do, the food we eat, the money we spend, the words we speak - in short, the minutest details of our lives. The result of Christ's unrestricted access is that the Christian becomes rooted and grounded in love, which is to be established in love as a way of life. The life of love is a life of kindness, selfishness, brokeness, and meekness. It is the life of Christ finding expression in the believer. John 14 v 2 - The Father's house refers to heaven, where there are many dwelling places. There is room there for all the redeemed. If it were not so, the Lord would not have told them; He would not have them build on false hopes. "I go to prepare a place for you may have two meanings. The Lord Jesus went to Calvary to prepare a place for His own. It is through His atoning death that believers are assured a place there, but we know that provision is being made for every child of God - " a prepared place for a prepared people!"

It is important to look at the context of this passage. Paul is speaking about the church body, and why it exists- to equip the saints. To ground us in truth, so we're not scattered by every lie that comes by. Then in vs 15, Paul begins to speak of what the end product should be of someone who is part of the church.
Speaking Truth, in Love. - we need to tell people the truth of Heaven and Hell, but it should be motivated out of our Love for them. We can't lie in order to be "nice" but we can't beat people up, either.
Into Him who is the Head, Christ- We should be changing more and more into someone like Jesus everyday. Church should move us towards His likeness.
Every Part does it's share- We all have a responsibility in the church, and God has designed us to fulfill that responsibility.
Causes growth of the Body- As I grow, I am better equipped to help those around me to grow.
Edifying of itself-literally means to build up
Summary-As Christians, we are each other's responsibility. If we see each other stumbling, we need to get involved. We are each other's cheerleaders. We need each other.

With the utmost respect, it takes me back to being a little girl, who held the hand of a "big brother", who would protect me, watch out for me, and show me the way, as he was wiser........
Christ is the example of what we should be, the more mature Christian is to lead in a loving manner, the newer Christian to a wider understanding. We are to enrich the path for others, and learn from others, as we all share a common journey.

To me, it means we should try our best to be like Him (But holding to truth in love we may grow up into Him in all things) and he is the one who should guide us (Who is the head, Christ)
The second part means, that we all need to do our part to be like him. Imagine if even just 50 % of all people did what God had planned for them, what a different place it would be? And all of the body of Christ (Christians) should show him to the non-believers.
This is what that verse means to me. Hope it helpt.

This verse means that Jesus is head of the Church, as believers we make up the Church, yet at the same time we make up one body, we should share everything, like we are one, we share talents and abilities that God gave us so we give back to him. It is important we practice this, because Jesus wants us to, remember, Jesus is not a religion, but a relationship that is timeless. Nice question. :)

Sandy: It demonstrates, that everyone has a purpose, is special to God and has spiritual gifts to contribute to the furtherance of the Gospel Message. This is the true work which only a "God" can and does, melding the people together irrespective of his or her skin colour or past sins, into a unified group. "To every purpose under heaven" !!!

all parts of the body need each other. they support one
another thus knitting the body together. one part can't
seperate from the rest and be independent. being
together gives strength. even if one has a home church
or a street ministry, we still need to help each other keep
the faith.

That there are people out there that you don't know, who are just like you because of faith. There is a oneness we share, and like brothers and sisters, there are also conflicts. But sometimes, a person need not say anything at all.
It is a good feeling.
